Uncover Hidden Talent: Hire the World’s Top New Digital Artists
I realized that I wanted to work in the entertainment industry at a very young age. I grew up playing video games, reading comics and watching movies. I was always inspired by the art, stories, and worlds being shown in the entertainment industry and I knew that my dream was to one day be able to contribute to this amazing industry.
At 9 years old, I wanted to explore the world with my Pikachu and become a Pokémon master, but that adventure only happened on a Gameboy. At 10 years old, I started my Jedi training, but my Force only worked on automatic doors. At 11 years old, I waited every day for an owl to bring me my Hogwarts enrollment letter. Almost two decades later, I instead received my acceptance letter from Gnomon.
For the first time I realized that I wanted to work in the entertainment industry in 2016. I made research in internet, found the best school, and began to prepare for enrollment. I’ve always been attracted to art — I have been drawing, sculpting, making pottery, taking photos, filming videos, playing guitar as a hobby.
Ever since I was young, drawing and creating was always the most fun aspect of my life. There was a natural progression of wanting to do more and more to take my art to the next level. Switching from traditional to digital made everything possible. Spending time at Gnomon helped me sharpen my skills into the artist I am today. As I begin my journey in the industry, I'm excited to grow even more doing what I love because art is all I wanted to do back then and it's all I want to do now.
I first realized I wanted to work in the industry as a kid, when I watched animated movies with my grandmother. I was really inspired by Disney movies as a kid, especially the Lion King. In preschool, they used to play an animated movie right before our nap time, so I'd dream about myself as a character in them sometimes.
The first video game I ever played was Commander Keen, an old platformer game that ran on DOS. I was too young to play the game effectively and most of the pixelated monsters gave me awful nightmares, but the game had me hooked. After Commander Keen, came The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and then Final Fantasy series. I have dedicated my education to becoming a professional artist because all I have ever wanted to do was create art for video games.
I first realized I wanted to create games when I was getting my Bachelor's Degree at Appalachian State University. I had the opportunity to take my first 3D modelling class. After that I was hooked; I always loved video games since I was a kid and that seemed like the perfect avenue for me to go down, so I did some research and found Gnomon, which was the perfect place for me to hone my skills and learn everything I would need to make it in the industry.
I realized I wanted to work in this industry early in my teens after I beat my first video game and cried because of the story. It inspired me to become a maker of fantasy worlds that I would start to escape to after my school days. I first started drawing, painting, then slowly started moving into CG.
When I first the movie Transformers, it blew my mind away seeing them in a live action movie. I grew up watching Transformers Armada back in the days so the live action was the best thing that happened to me. After which I only focused on one goal which was to be good enough to work on a Transformers movie.
I was already deep into the arts for a long time, so by the time high school rolled around I was already thinking of going the entertainment design route. Of course back then I was exclusively a 2d artist, the transition to 3d felt like the most natural next step forward to becoming closer to the creative media I enjoy on the daily. That consists of animation, video games, and more recently, movies!
I realized I wanted to be an artist for film when I started to follow other artists who were creating for the industry--when I could relate to the struggles and aspirations of people doing that kind of work, and see how rewarding it could be to help tell a story beloved and appreciated by others, I knew this was the right path.
I've always wanted to work in film in some capacity. Growing up, I watched every movie I could get my hands on. When dvds came out with commentary, I watched those daily until I knew them by heart. Finally someone introduced me to Gnomon it was like when Neo sees the matrix for the first time. All my interests and skills suddenly fit together to complete the puzzle and I knew what I had to do.
I was serving in the US Army as a 25S and I had purchased Zbrush as I wanted to create. After learning how to use it I found a passion in creating in 3D. I took a year or so to think about what I wanted to do as I was still on my military contact. Gnomon had just created their BFA program and I still had a GI Bill available. It felt like a alignment of fate, though I'm not a spiritual person. I then used the rest of my free time prepping to get into Gnomon. Now at first game dev job.
I remember recording and subsequently wearing out the VHS of Star Wars and Jurassic Park behind the scenes specials, I think I've always known I wanted to work in Visual Effects. I spent my 20s developing my 2D skills and artistic fundamentals which helped me get into Gnomon School for VFX & Animation. I'm now working hard to become a pro-level CG Artist
Hi, my name is Kathryn Sageman and I am a 3D Generalist . I focus on previs / layout and animation. I have always had an interest in animation and the element of story is very important to me as an artist. I enjoy designing and creating shots and see countless possibilities for combining features in the natural world with characters to tell a story. While studying animation I learned how to create shots which drove my passion for wanting to work in the entertainment industry.
The first moment I realized I wanted to work in the creative media and entertainment industry was when I landed a job in Quality Assurance for Rockstar North in Edinburgh. I had been focus testing Grand Theft Auto IV and got called back for a contract. I loved working there and woke up each morning excited to get going. I realized I could actually make a career out of this. It seemed such a natural fit for me.
When I graduated highschool I knew I wanted to be in the arts though I wasn't sure what exactly I wanted to do. I finally got an ad on Instagram about a school in LA called Gnomon. I poorly made a donut in Blender and from then on I was on my 3D journey Since then I have been studying at Gnomon for a year and a half in their BFA Games track.
