A team of designers collaborated to research and prototype an online classroom built for use by teachers, parents, and students facing the hardships of online learning during COVID-19. The solution is a universal platform with gamified learning activities and contextual messaging capabilities among others.

GamePlan is an online learning environment that places the entire classroom experience in one place, and streamlines communication through contextual messaging between parents, teachers, and students. It engages students through gamified lessons, and collaborative learning which encourages social interaction and fun.

Problem

Current online classrooms lack a focus on education all-in-one place, and as a result are arduous to use and lead to a confusing experience. Online learning has deprived students of the valuable social interactions and collaborative learning opportunities of in-person schooling. Due to the pandemic, parents have unexpectedly had to take on a teacher role at home and struggle to balance this new role with their busy lifestyle.

Solution

GamePlan seeks to create an all-in-one platform that emphasizes gamified learning and contextual messaging. Each user of the GamePlan system has unique interfaces designed with their specific tasks in mind.

Teachers are able to create and customize content for their classrooms and incorporate engaging, gamified assignments into their lesson plans. Furthermore, all of the teachers’ core jobs can be accomplished in the same environment with streamlined grading, attendance, instruction, and communication capabilities.

Students have messaging capabilities and multiple features designed to help them stay on time and on task. That being said, the majority of their time is focused on learning. The student game world offers fun lessons and collaborative educational games for students. They are rewarded for their work on assignments with visual customization options to show their progression.

Parents are able to stay involved in their children’s education, in a way that minimizes effort expended in their role as a home educator and drives self-sufficiency for their students. Parents are able to monitor student progress, see student lessons, and communicate both with child and teacher. However, while they are able to assist with technology and lessons as needed, they may do so with added context and without having to be physically present.
