The Amphithere who entertained you at what cost

Adelina Ford
by adelina on 14 Apr 2019 for Circus Challenge

The project idea is to design, sculpt and texture a realistic looking dragon that has been used for entertainment in a circus. The circumstances of taming gave it a rough life.

Update - 30 Apr 2019

The final textures and renders are ready for my dragon.

If I had more time, I'd like to work more on improving texturing as I am quite new in this area, and I would add a small animation to give it life.

Update - 28 Apr 2019

Retopology is finally ready! The sole purpose of it is to be able to texture it.

This is the stage where I am able to add details without changing the overall shape of my dragon

Update - 19 Apr 2019

I wanted my dragon to be more gentle, so I made some changes. The wings lowered show less aggression and the horns with curves are less threatening. Also, the mouth closed is friendlier.

The circus shows have way too many decorations in them, so I added more for my dragon.

I am happy with how it looks like at this stage, so next, my plan is to retopologize it while I also work on the highest subdivision for details. Alternating will add some variety in my workflow.

Update - 14 Apr 2019

Working with mathematically or physically generated objects is one of my favorite parts of modelling. When nature works that way too, I am happy to apply it to my work, therefore, this is how I created the spiral horns. Also, I feel like a little bit of cloth and the harness straps creates a more dynamic pose.

Adding some details but still working on the overall shape and design.

Also I tried a new pose. Goodbye symmetry.

Note: It is possible to work with posed symmetry which is going to save me so much time! Thanks Flipped Normals for this great tip!

I started off by blocking the general shape of the dragon so far.

I am keeping the wings, horns and tail on different meshes for it to be easier to work with. More soon!

Marathon creature creation for about two more busy weeks!

My plan is to create a dragon like entertainment creature that has been oppressed by circus tamers and had a rough life. Ultimately it will create a contrast between the colorful accessories and clothes, and the body scars sad posture.
