1960's Chicago Roller Skates

These are my mother's roller skates from her childhood that she used and shared with my aunt in the mid 1960's.

I found these buried in the garage and fell in love with not only the vintage design but also the way the years had aged them and the story that they told.

From the rust on the wheels and bottom that might have come from being left in the rain or just having been skated through too many puddles, to the makeshift holes added to the strap because someones foot was too small, these skates were full of life and when I found them I wanted to capture that life in 3D.

I had a lot of fun with this project. Texturing this asset felt like a whole new world compared to the first time using Mari, as my growing comfortability with the program helped make my time texturing more efficient and a lot more fun.

Come render time, I really enjoyed playing around with the lighting and position of the skates in the scene, as well as the camera settings to help achieve the best render that I could.

The material on the foot strap was a challenge for me, as I had never made anything with that kind of material before. Finding the right balance of  transparency and playing with the way I had to adjust my texture painting for this material was really rewarding.

This asset was particularly fulfilling and challenging because I actually had a physical reference object to use to my advantage. I believe this helped me get as accurate as possible when modeling the skates and being able to take photos to use as texture maps was a great resource that helped speed up the process.

Mitchell NC Standard 35MM Camera

This is a Mitchell NC Standard 35MM Camera from the 1920s-30s that I modeled and textured. The camera I used for reference was used to film All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), Frankenstein (1931), and Dracula (1931), as well as some effects shots for Star Trek: The Original Series.

This project was challenging as I had never textured an asset that had this many different materials and wasn't completely familiar with using Mari, so while working on it I was forced to learn how to handle different issues that came up as well as essentially learning how to use a program that I wasn't comfortable with.

With limited reference, modeling the camera was also a challenge, but finding where all of the small pieces fit together was a gratifying experience. There are certain things that I did while working on this project that I could have done differently to help make my workflow more efficient, so I'm glad I was able to work through those issues as it made my next project much easier to work on.

It was very rewarding to learn and teach my way through this project and see it through to the end. I look forward to taking the lessons learned through creating this camera and applying them to all my future work.
