Development Process/Challenges

Rhythm Ring Revolution is the first game that our group completed and published to an established platform, so it came with a lot of challenges. Dynamic tempo is very complicated to achieve while not affecting the pitch, but we managed to solve it by playing individual notes rather than a complete soundtrack and manipulating the rate at which these notes were played. Likewise, procedurally generated music involved integrating a third-party asset and setting up systems to create the music properly; this enabled the game to use a variety of music themes that synced up with the gameplay. COVID also made it much more difficult to do playtesting and overall increased development time significantly.

Throughout the project, we developed our game with a core set of design goals: a game that is simple, quick, and replayable. These design goals shaped the development process of the game and were reflected in the final product.
-Simple: The gameplay only has input of tapping or holding down the screen
-Quick: 2 minutes per game enables players to play a round during a few minutes of downtime
-Replayable: 4 different difficulty options and varying beat tracks ensure that no two games are the same

There were a lot of mobile-specific constraints that we had to account for throughout our development, such as aspect ratios ranging from 4:3 to 21:9 and memory/performance limitations. Since we wanted to publish to both iOS and Android, we also needed to obtain a publisher. Our partnership with MAGIC Spell Studios worked very well for us, and we were able to publish the game successfully on February 11, 2021.
