Peace and Love
A nostalgic look back at a unique vehicle that went into production 50 years before I was born.
Update - 24 Dec 2020
In projects like these I like focusing my work to express one core idea, so for this project that idea is nostalgia. As a kid I had a toy Volkswagen bus, so this subject matter is inherently nostalgic for me. To develop this idea I focused on creating a realistic presentation, with unprofessional decorations that would be personally appealing to the owner. These decorations would be past their prime, and worn down with time. To add history to the vehicle I added windshield wiper marks, rust on the roof, dirt on the bottom half of the van, sun damage, an impact crack on the front window, and general variation in the paint. The materials used in this project were all hand made in substance designer, including the cracked glass and windshield wiper marks.
I used a paint layer to add the lettering and a few sunflower pictures to the side of the kombi. I fed these into a substance graph using an anchor point, and quantized the image to imitate using a set number of paint types. Using a tile sampler I mimicked the brush marks of an amateur painter, and simplified the shapes until they were just vague impressions. Finally I added more paint bubbles, and used flattened versions of the paint marks to define the color for each paint drop.
I'm switching gears and focusing on other projects for the duration of my winter break, so I won't be dedicating much time to this project. If I spend more time on this, I plan on improving the hierarchy of details, adding visual interest to the roof and white sections of the car, creating a novelty license plate, improving the painted material and mask, creating dirt stained rain streaks, and achieving the exact specular response I see in my reference images.
