Rebelway FX Challenge

by sandra on 17 Dec 2020 for Rebelway FX Challenge

I know how to set things on fire and "order" particles to move, but everything else will be much much harder. Soooo, for me it will be Challenge². I am not a big fan of typing, so I will mostly stick to smaller updates. I don't mind answering questions though, so if you have any - feel free to ask.

Test-Research-Learn

Testing ideas

Up until now I was doing some tests, experiments, research on my primary ideas and looking for new ones.  I am concerned that from a distance camera the ideas would look well, but with the project's camera they wouldn't. I haven't spent a lot of time rendering tests (Sorry for low-rez).

I was looking into fluids with different types of densities, grain simulation, RenderMan 23.5, ACES.

(Looks like the Hydralisk is having a bath O.O)

Research

Sand and fluids simulations

Different types of fluids idea (in the video above) was G.Solman's (https://diffusefx.com/). I had watched his explanation and wanted to recreate it to understand the setup and thinking proccess.

Learning something new

I know that you can get pretty amazing effects using shaders and it is a path worth exploring.

Why RenderMan for the rendering job? I had rendered with RenderMan when I did 3D modeling in Maya, some time ago and it was quite easy to use for me. Also, I found out that RenderMan has a Statistics feature that lets you get rendering information in XML format.  My PC is not very powerful so I like to track some data (earlier I was writing it on notepad :D )

Here is an example of how the file looks like (if someone is interested):

Story. (Shot #1)

Although there is nothing spectacular in this shot yet, my main purpose was to roughly create what I want to add in this shot, where and in which time frames. As well as to create a short story behind it.

For now, I have this:

Cyborg steps through barrier field (1) -> Finds energy orb (2) - > Hydralisk jumps from under the ground (3?) -> Hydralisk's limbs touch the ground (4) -> Environment reacts to Hydralisk actions (5)

I still haven't decided: the appearance of the Hydralisk

Update - 17 Dec 2020

Apart from the real world, I draw a lot of inspiration from a lot of creative digital works, such as "Stargate SG1", "Path of Exile", MARVEL movies and many others.

Environment

At first, I wanted to create a mood and environment board for myself to choose the direction I want to go to.

I decided to go with a dark, shallow landscape and a humid, cold feeling.

I will start by creating Hydralisk’s interactions with the environment.
