K0M-B1 - Worldstrider

The Year is 2149 and for the Kombi's 200 year anniversary, Volkswagen has decided to collaborate with Earth's Galactic Space Federation to release the "K0M-B1- Worldstrider". The K0M-B1 is retro-fitted with industrial grade space parts in order to allow for safe and reliable ground transport accross any alien terrain.

Update - 18 Dec 2020

I tried bashing together some normals to try to add little accents to the form of the Kombi as well as playing with the colours a little to see how they worked. I didn't like the orange in my sketchup as much as I found it to feel much more "service vehicle - y", so I decided to go with blue. I may change my mind down the line but for now I'll block these colours in and I'll adjust them on the fly once I'm satisfied with the composition.

I noticed a lot of previous contest entries used their displacement scaling in creative ways and since I had no experience with this I wanted to play around to see how I could use it.
I quickly learned that amping up the tesselation scale really makes the model quite wonky. I noticed that texturing boosted tesselation areas proved to be difficult so I opted on boosting it on the tires to make them look like heavy duty, ATV type tires that would be perfect for traversing the rocky, lunar landscape.

Update - 15 Dec 2020

Right off the bat I decided to lay down some general colours, shapes, and materials just to get a better idea of things and qualities that I liked as well as elements that seemed to work well with one another.

I noticed spaceships like a lot of white/greys/silvers for the primary colour and blacks/yellows/brass/silver colours for accents. I didn't want the entire thing to be primarily white, so I wanted to add either a blue or orange as a secondary to make things more interesting.

If colours were introduced it was usually oranges for anything Martian related and blues/whites/silvers for most things Lunar related. I started with orange but I thought it looked too much like a service vehicle so I switched over to this blue as a secondary colour.

I like it so far so I'll keep fleshing it out and see where I end up! :)

Update - 13 Dec 2020

I painted over some screenshots to get an idea about the colours.
I haven't decided between orange and blue as well as how much of those colours to include but I think I'll start with this and see where we end up.

Update - 13 Dec 2020

I wanted to start off with a cool concept that I could build upon to add interesting story elements to the humble Kombi. I always liked space exploration so I decided to take the Kombi and turn it into a space rover.
I fell in love with this idea since I could re-skin a bunch of otherwise basic attributes of the Kombi to apply the concept to it. The Kombi's wheels could be sturdy and puffy space-wheels etc.

I also liked this concept since I could add a lot of greebles and indents to break up the general shapes the Kombi is built from.

Now that I've got ample video and picture references I think I'm going to proceed by blocking out colours and general points of interest around each face of the Kombi.

Let's see how this goes!
