Beach Kombi-ng

This is the type of Kombi I could see myself in. Its such an Iconic design, I wouldnt want my paint job to ruin it.

Update - 30 Dec 2020

My Kombi has gone through a many iterations and changes. It still represents the original theme of a beach Kombi. The vehicle has lived its life on beach roads and beaches, showing rust and wear. Murals were painted long before the rust took hold and doors needed replacing. I used Japanese imagery on the sides and front of the vehicle. The front face seemed to suit the bulging headlamps and teeth on the bumper; and the sides had big open spaces to use as a blank canvas.

I have learnt a lot about Substance during the process of this project; how to use a brush, procedural material tweaking, and overall composition. I hope you like my entry to the Kombi Challenge!

On the left hand side of the Vehicle is a Gold fish. The orange helps to brighten up the vehicle and give it some direction, hinting that the owner of the Kombi liked fishing. I originally put lots of rust on the vehicle, but it was harder to show the panel artwork and it didn't feel as realistic. So, I dialled back the rust but kept some of the bubbles in the surface showing the rust beneath the paint job.

As the Kombi is a rear engine vehicle, I put oil stains out the back door and on the side vents. There is oil dripping over the rear bumper too. I also spent some time to tune the rear break lamps and indicators on the top half of the light.

The wave mural which is an iconic Japanese image represents the location that the vehicle has lived. In the past, the owner enjoyed surfing. Once again the mural has direction; the peak and trough of the wave also shows balance, much like the stand of the Iconic Kombi

The white parts of the eyes have been painted blue and I tried to make the lamp colour slightly blue to emphasise the Blue Eyes of this monster. My original colour was pinkish red, but felt it was too angry and may scare cars infront looking at the rear view mirror. So, I researched eye images and loved the way the colours mixed and looked. I decided to put in more details in the eyes, being such an important part of the car, I should spend more time on the details.

Hope you liked my entry. It was a really fun process, even visualising bugsplat!

Update - 25 Dec 2020

I needed to make the vehicle body colour more realistic, so tried to improve with an old flaking paint job. Colour scheme had to change along with it. I reduced some of the rust and dirt to draw attention to areas I wanted like the mouthand eyes.

Update - 23 Dec 2020

I keep the painted details with the rusty look so that I am using all the fun procedural textures with some personal artwork.

Update - 19 Dec 2020

I think Im getting better with the consistency of the piece

Dialing in those textures. Loving the flexibility of the smart materials. This project as with every painting I do in Substance, is a great learning experience.
