The Necron Crypt

by taylorgiarrusso on 1 Jun 2020 for Rookie Awards 2020

My name is Taylor Giarrusso and I based this environment after the Warhammer 40k Necrons. I made this scene starting in Autodesk Maya, moving to Substance Painter, then moving all of these exports over to Unity 3D. Rights belong to Games Workshop.

Hello, my name is Taylor Giarrusso and I decided I would make a fan game environment for the Necron faction in Warhammer 40k, which all rights go to Games Workshop.

I started out with contextualizing my idea through a pre-production phase. I went for an art board and a mood board.

Then from there I started with an asset list and moved onto actually modeling out what I needed in Maya.

So I decided I also wanted the models to be low poly because the game I was using the most reference from was from 2006. I also wanted to make sure that the low poly was used as the high poly in Substance Painter.

After I exported my models for texturing, I wanted to aim for one smart material and only a black mask with a paint brush for extra details such as the particle systems I used and the Necron symbols for the height maps.

After I was satisfied with how my textures and models turned out I started with putting my Objects and Textures together so I could start on my game environment. I was also attempting to make use of some modular assets.

The scene is all set up in unity.

Then I worked my way up to something I was comfortable with and made this by adding some fog and setting the time of day to sunset to give the scene an orange feel. This is how my final scene turned out.
