Creature & Charcter Design

I am currently a second year student at CDW Studios/Finders University. I aspire to work on games and films, designing characters and creatures with a 3D medium. This year I discovered my passion for 3D work and am working on developing my skills.

Fungi Creature

For my first 3D project I sculpted a forest dwelling fungi creature in Zbrush. I played around with different materials to try and create contrast between the different fungi.

Goblin

During the holidays I began to experiment more in ZBrush by doing some quick concept sculpts. I ended up with a goblin-like creature. This sculpt in particular helped me to find my personal workflow and style in this medium.

Tortured Dragon

For my creature design class, I have been working on a dragon concept. This concept has and will be taken from concept drawing to completed render with proper texturing and lighting. This is my work-in-progress for this project.

I began by sketching out a couple of concepts using armadillos, bats and pangolins.

Next I sculpted the heads of my concepts in ZBrush, playing around with the designs in the process. With these sculpts I began to see noticeable improvement in my work.

I also had the opportunity to learn how to create my own alphas. I used this one to add some detail to my dragons body.

My idea for this dragon was that it had been captured and tortured as shown by its rugged and injured appearance.

Alien Soldier

The brief for my character design major project was for a game called 'Eden' in which a futuristic Earth is attacked by an alien species.

I designed an alien soldier with insect-like attributes. I used earthy colours to convey the idea that they can camouflage and a vibrant accent colour to add more interest to the design.

In Maya I added sci-fi elements to a low-poly model. Laser/projection blades that come from a wrist attachment, wings that project from a sort of backpack and a mechanical heart.

Octagons made up the base shapes for each piece and I kept the details simple for a sleek, futuristic design.

'Girl'

With this personal project I wanted to work on something that would challenge me but allow me to learn a new program. Cindy Avelino allowed me to create a 3D sculpture of her concept art titled 'Djinn and Girl'. This is my progress so far.

I got the chance to use Marvelous Designer for the first time to create the Girls clothes. It was definitely a challenge but I am pleased with the outcome.

I modelled her accessories in Maya and added finishing touches in ZBrush.

Thank you,

Aiyesha Bridle
