Rainier Velano - Rookie Awards 2020 Entry

THE WARLOCK

This first part my entry is a personal project of mine that I finished just recently. It was planned to be an entry for the Rookies Award 2020 and the Warlock Challenge from FlippedNormals. I used Zbrush for modelling and sculpting, Substance Painter for texturing and Maya for fur, stubble & some fibres (xgen) and rendering (Arnold).

The design of his garments is like a mashup (also as a homage) to a few of my favourite franchises.

A few things I want to mention and acknowledge:

For the fur, I used fibermesh initially in Zbrush and then export it to curves to used as guides in Maya xgen for grooming.

I used an alpha (by Travis Davids) as a  surface noise to create the pattern on the pauldrons. I also used alphas (by Daniel "Green" Rozanski) to create the lion ornament and the one on the side of the pauldrons. Both amazing artist, please check them out on Artstation and Gumroad.

This later part of my entry are segments from my demo reel (Dec. 2019) from school showcasing my models for that term.

The first character is from a concept for a Kamen Rider character I found in Pinterest. I really liked the design and wanted to model it but I don't really know the original author. Kudos to him and I don't claim ownership on the design, just the 3D model.

Next model is TRUNKS from the series Dragon Ball Z. I wanted to model someone familiar and when I was starting to brainstorm for my reel, a friend suggested DBZ.  I ultimately chose TRUNKS since he is one of my favourite in the series and I also thought that it will be interesting to make model a humanized version of him for my next model as well.
