My 3D Animation journey thus far
For my entry, I would like to showcase all the 3D Animations that I have done over a year. From a bouncing ball to a full body human character!
Greetings! I am Chua Yu Heng, a student animator from Nanyang Polytechnic's School of Interactive and Digital Media.
Today, I will show you 3D Animations that I've done over the past 1 year in my school!
It all started out with my first assignment, animating a bouncing ball with personality jumping over something!
In the next assignment, I had to animate a biped character doing a jump!
That was when I started learning a little bit about body mechanics and how important hip movements are.
For my third assignment, I had to animate a human character doing a throw.
It was my first time fully animating a human character and definitely learnt a lot more about body mechanics.
For my fourth assignment, we had to animate a character doing a side step, a turn and then a kick.
The main focus was to train us on body mechanics so do pardon the lack of animation on the hands and face.
For my fifth assignment, we had to animate a walk cycle.
Seemed easy at first, until I realised how tough it was to polish the animation nicely.
For this assignment, we had to animate our character going through a change in emotion.
So mine was from calm and vigilant to frightened to relax. I unknowingly did two changes in emotion.
Then came Studio Project 3, where I have to work with other students to do a 3D Animatic. There wasn't really much time given to us for animating but I still managed to do a little as seen above.
This was special to me because I had to animate a bird, which I've never done before. I had to look at video references to see how birds flap their wings and such.
Here is a link to the 3D Animatic we did: https://youtu.be/M_kSrdX4OY8
I was hesitant about showing this animation at first because you can clearly tell that it's not very polished, so definitely not very proud of this one.
After some soul searching, the main causes were probably poor time management and an untidy work habit. There were frames keyed here and there, everything was so messy.
So in this assignment, I swore not to make the same mistake. I tried not to key too many frames so I can edit things more easily.
And this was my first time doing lip sync animation between two characters! Definitely need more practice on the facial.
The audio clip used here is from the 2004 horror and comedy film, Shaun of the Dead.
It was time for Studio Project 4, where I have to work with other students on a short film.
I wasn't actually tasked to animate this shot at first but my group mate had some difficulty animating it so I stepped in to help polish and fix her work in progress. Had to pull an all-nighter to make it in time for submission! Hah Good times.
This is the shot that I was tasked to do, the boy was initially happy going up the ride and then it drops at high speed and he starts fearing for his life.
If you want to check out the short film, my team made an entry for The Rookies 2020! Here's the link: https://www.therookies.co/entries/6684
And that is all the 3D Animating I've done for the past 1 year in SIDM. It may be a short 1 year, but it felt so long after looking at all the things I have done. And I'm not done yet! I am currently working on another 3D lip sync Animation and a short 2D Animation. Maybe I'll be sending them for next year's Rookie Awards!
Thank you for viewing, any feedback is welcomed and I wish you a good day(or night)!
