A remake of the Contessa level in Sucker Punch Productions' Sly 2: Band of Thieves within Unreal Engine 4.
Contessa's Castle - Sly 2: Band of Thieves Remaster
To recreate a portion of this level, I used the original game as a direct reference. I wanted to push the gloomy atmosphere whilst still paying homage to the franchise.
I created a video using cameras inside Unreal Engine in order to bring my environment to life and allow the particle effects and fog to be seen more clearly. I also wanted fans of the franchise to see what a remaster could look like and added the original music from the game.
For this project, I pushed myself to learn advanced techniques including vertex painting and the use of LOD's. I wanted to fake the appearance of a town in the distance but worried about the amount of polys this would use. To avoid this extra poly count, I took images of the buildings I had already built and lit and applied them to flat planes throughout the background.
The majority of the buildings in the scene were created using modular pieces taken from the crypt asset. I also made windows and extra pieces which provided me with a complete building kit. This cut the production time down enormously as well as reducing the amount of draw calls as they all used the same UV's.
