Clothing Iron Concept
2nd Year uni project where we were to design a concept for a clothing iron using a chosen theme.
INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT
This project was a 2nd year university project where the main focus was pulling styling ques from a chosen theme being either Military, Sci-fi or Sports and creating a clothing iron concept based around those themes.
My chosen theme was Sports and then went into a sub-theme of F1 Motorsports.
This project only focused on the appearance of the product and not the technical package that would be needed but had certain constraints on the different features that the iron had to include.
Constraints
1. Interaction
• On/off control.
• Heating indication.
• Heat setting adjustment (cool to hot).
• Steam burst
• Add water and remove water (350mL)
• Storage
• Cable management
2. Graphic constraints
• Minimal ‘Universal’ product graphics, (ideally the interface should be self-explanatory and not
require any graphics)
• No digital displays (for example, LCD/OLED screens).
3. Size constraints
• Keep the size typical for a product of this kind (Do some research. While you have no
technical package to work around, you should still have an understanding as to how existing
products in the space work and what their approximate size is. Use an existing product for
reference as to what technology your product needs to package. No 'blue-sky' technologies to
be incorporated in the concepts).
• Needs to contain a volume of a 350mL of water.
4. Human Factors
• The ergonomics of the physical and cognitive interactions need to be considered. Your
product should be able to be used by the broadest possible range of users.
INITIAL MOODBOARD AND THEMEBOARD
The main mood I try to convey here was that of speed and being agile due to the whole sport I was focusing on being that of a race of speed.
There was a big focus on the aggressive nature of the sport but also how it seems to flow both in the act of driving but also in the aesthetics of the cars themselves.

TESTING, OBSERVATION AND INTERACTION
The next images shown are the testing of existing products, the observations of other people using clothing irons and also the different interactions strategies that could be achieved.

Final Concept Sketch
I went with the 3rd concept and then started to improve slightly upon before I started to create a 3D CAD model.
With the main change being how the handle connects to the main body.
Foam Model
3D CAD MODEL
To create the model I used SOLIDWORKS and based it off the measurements of my foam model and the overall look as well.
I made improvements along the way and also changed up the look of some components.
The main features of this iron include:
Removable water tank
Buttons underneath to keep sleek profile
Rotational cable in intuitive position
On/Off and settings control in easily accessible position (on handle)
Water tank lights up when the iron is turned on
