by jinyao on 1 Jun 2020 for Rookie Awards 2020

Hi! I'm Jenna and I'm studying to be a character artist. I'm still in the process of learning the character pipeline, but I hope you enjoy seeing my progress so far! https://www.artstation.com/jinyao

Red Riding Hood

My first piece is a sculpt based on a lovely concept by Park JunKyu. My goal for this project was cleanliness in the details! This was my 2nd ever character and I learned a lot of new processes for sculpting as well as Marvelous Designer (which was used for the bottom cape). I also learned Keyshot rendering during this project.

Emperor Dragon

Next is my Emperor Dragon sculpt. I wanted to create a fierce, regal character that took elements from Eastern and Western dragons. The overall concept is my design, however, the halberd design is by MinWook Kim and was inspired by Paul Tosca's clothing design. This was my first big project that I went back to pose and clean for my portfolio!

Texturing for Games Practice

These are renders from my class I recently finished with CGMA: Character Texturing for Games in Substance taught by Saurabh Jethani. My first time using Substance Painter and Marmoset Toolbag, Saurabh provided the students with the hi-res and low-res models so the class could focus on learning Substance, baking in Painter, and PBR rendering. Textures are done by me, and I recommend the class to those who are new to Substance Painter!

Works in Progress

Finally, here are some works in progress that I've yet to finish for my portfolio! I am working on finishing a stylized version of Tifa from FFVII, concept by Cheshirrr on Twitter. This was for practicing stylized anatomy and matching a concept 1:1. My big project I am currently working on is my first game character based on the concept PLUTO by Cherry CHE. I've finished the hi-res model and am in the retopo phase. I hope you'll check out my finished version on ArtStation when I'm done!
