Dragon Tamer & Friends

The dragon tamer captures and trains draconid species to be sold as pets. Being such a dangerous career, dragon tamers are paid extremely well, enabling them to purchase the finest armour.

Round of applause for our sponsors

I unfortunately learned of this competition rather late and whilst I still had prior commitments that I needed to complete. Due to this, I started working on my entry for this competition on the 25th of March. I decided to use some of my personal work alongside some new work I had produced to submit as much content as possible as any feedback and understanding how my work ranks would really help me figure out how to progress further.

My initial silhouettes were quick ideas to formulate a character as quickly as possible. I had no idea what I was going to try and create at this point, whether the character should be organic or wearing clothing/armour. When iterating on some of the silhouettes I decided that this character should be a 'Dragon Tamer' as it would go well with some other concepts I have completed recently.

The Fruit Dragons are one of the more common draconid pets sold by dragon tamers. They inhabit jungle areas and are among the smallest dragons found. They consume enormous amounts of fruit to counter-balance the high energy loss from maintaining a flame; a feat that they can only achieve for around a minute or so before they must replenish their energy.

Another common draconid pet is the 'Wasp dragon'. These relatively small species are made dangerous primarily by the sheer number of them you are likely to encounter at one time. They reside in colonies usually found in mountainous regions and they often attack in large swarms. Encountered one-on-one however, dragon tamers can capture these creatures with relative ease.

There are a number of things I would change about my submission given the opportunity. Firstly, being unaware of this competition until such a late stage forced me to rush a lot of the work meaning I didn't iterate on designs as much as I would have liked and the final pieces were presented to a sub-par level. Secondly, due to Covid-19, access to university equipment is completely restricted meaning I couldn't use 3D software or a more up to date version of photoshop, though this was a minor hurdle in comparison to the time.

Next year I will ensure to begin developing work much earlier to ensure a more complete and higher quality submission and I will enter more of the internship competitions also. This competition was a lot of fun and I look forward to trying it again next year.
