Matilda Gunter's Portfolio Entry 2020

Matilda Gunter
by roseymatilda on 31 May 2020 for Rookie Awards 2020

Hello! I'm Matilda :) I'm currently a student at Flinders/CDW Studios working towards a Bachelor of Visual Effects and Entertainment Design. My entry contains quite a range of different things surrounding illustration and concept art, and I'm working towards becoming either a designer or illustrator in the future.

CHARACTER DESIGNS

These are a few character designs that I've made over the past year.

The Three-headed Geisha and the Oni with the Dragon Hand were a part of a Character Design class, in which I added filters using the tutorial How To Make A Fake Retro Anime Screenshot by Tamakid.

The super flexible girl was a tableaux prompt that I got from my Multimedia class; Joyful #E2C290 Punk. It was also where I first discovered the wonders of having a Marbled Background, in which I proceeded to apply to the rest of these.

Pegweg was a character that I made for my first DND Campaign that I did with my friends over the summer, he's a Neutral-Good Cleric Dwarf if anyone was curious.

Speaking of my Geisha and Oni....

My final art piece for that Character Design subject was a mini comic of them having a lighthearted, monochromatic duke out. Things may get a little salty here and there but for scary monsters, they make good mutual buddies.

To round this section off....

Is the Free Choice image that I made for my Design class. It depicts my two main OCs, Tom and Charli as they're on the run and hoarding as many chip packets as they can carry like usual.

ENVIRONMENTAL PIECES

For my final project for my Design class, I had to make a fishmonger market stall. I designed mine so that it could fit within the same universe I have Tom and Charli in.

For context, Charli is a self-proclaimed pirate who was taken inside a protected community for susceptible persons with superpowers after being found in a youth gang drug trafficking ring. Almost everyone in that community is deathly scared of Charli as many suspect that she holds alot more power than most.... and also acts as an exterimator for the local fishmonger (that happens to be located right next to the lighthouse where she lives with the owners,) where she deals with the growing infestation of possessed fish by driving their souls out. Despite seeming to be really into this interesting mix of hunting and exorcism, she wants nothing more but to escape the compound and find the ocean again, even to the detriment of her safety.

Tom often tags along as he's become accustomed to leaving, ever since a long string of horrific events and reveals has led him to lose his faith in the community. Leaving the community without strict permission can be a serious offence and the Mayor is held responsible for their whereabouts, hence why they're both often being needed to be tracked down.

I did some monochromatic, flat colour environments for my Digital Painting finals.

They're focused around a rather haunted mansion of the Mayor's, in which Tom had the misfortune of having to visit as part of a school related appointment (as it is a small enough community for the Mayor to be also in charge of one of two of the schools). As Tom quickly discovers, his intentions were alot more calculating than he initally let on as he intentionally invited Tom over to expose his family's secret of being a long line of shapeshifting reptile aliens.

ICONS

I designed some cute Tom icons to go all over my socials (including this one, cuz why not!)

Those faces were intially a part of the expression section on a character sheet I had to do for an Animation assignment. I applied the same filter that I used for my Oni and Geisha (see the Character Design section earlier for the tutorial link).

DIARY CONCEPTS

I recently did a personal project where I constructed covers for three books that I made not long ago.

As I didn't think I could include the final results of the covers into this competition (given that it fits more into Traditional Craft), I thought I'd plan ahead and do some Concept Art as it'd give me a better idea of what I'm actually doing as well.

I did this Concept Art process entriely in Illustrator which I've been coming to use more thanks to my Multimedia class including some mini projects and exercises. It always seems to export much more saturated for some baffling reason.

Final thing is, all of these covers may have had been entirely inspired by the Barbie Movies (aka. mankind's greatest accomplishment). The whole concept was taken from this iconic relic from the appropriately named; The Barbie Diaries, in which I added some variations and simplified quotes from each movie that I very conveniently referenced in the art sheet below.

GENERAL ILLUSTRATIONS

These were part of a month-long Instagram challenge that I attempted back in February called FebFunFest in which the prompts were each a word that wasmostly obscure and/or unusual.

While I only got to about halfway in the end, I've managed to churn out a few pieces that I felt quite proud of considering that they were all mostly done in one night for each.

The ones that I've picked out for this contest were for Days #3, #6 and #7 (pieces also listed in that order.)

Day 3 was Paroxysm ("a sudden attack or outburst of a particular emotion or activity,") which i depicted Tom and another fellow OC of mine, Marty in a fusion dance. They're both known to be quite sporadic, so I thought it'd fit well to fuse them together.

Day 6 was Quixotic ("extremely idealistic; unrealistic and impractical,") where I drew Tom once again but in a more comic based composition where he senses that the alphabet soup is talking to him.

At last, Day 7 was Loquacious ("tending to talk a great deal; talkative,") where Marty feels at most comfortable; winning the Spelling Bee in his prized bee costume once again.

WHEW!

You've finally made it to the end of my entry!

Thank you for stopping by!
