My 2020 Portfolio
My time this past 9 months has been devoted to learning more and more about environment creation and digital art. I've chosen these scenes because I think they show where I am as an artist. I'm excited to keep on working on my skills and be able to have new things to show next year!
My 2020 Portfolio
Klimt Subway Station
I created this for my Lighting 1 class at Gnomon after being inspired by a piece of concept art by Anda Sung. (https://www.artstation.com/artwork/DxoE3R) The beautiful pattern work inspired by some of the works of Klimt really intrigued me. As I began to block out the piece, I kept on thinking about how it could be used. As a student planning to get into environment art I wanted to create a space that had a definite purpose. Seeing how Los Angeles decorates its Metro system, I decided it would be interesting to apply the ideas of the concept art to a subway station.
Some of my early struggles with this piece was figuring out how to implement the patterns into a 3D scene without creating pattern overload for our eyes. I settled on reducing the number of patterns, and I tried to create areas of rest in the composition. I struggled working with the scene's lighting and achieving that colorful look that I was aiming for. With lots of help from my instructor, Oded Raz, I was able to implement some changes throughout the quarter that brought the scene's lighting together.
Ivar Street 2073
This project was made for my Texturing 2 class at Gnomon. I wanted to create a scene that was inspired by my late walks home from night classes. A challenge I faced was that I tried to come up with the concept and design myself. I really wanted to try and inject a story into this simple street scene. I haven't concepted many pieces myself, so I had to look to my classmates, friends, and instructor for some feedback. Using the feedback they gave me, I finally land on this final composition.
Ray Runner
This piece is based off of Darren Bartley's Tribal World series. (https://www.artstation.com/fightpunch) The amazing use of organic shapes as mechanical structures drew me into the concept. A desert world where people travel using giant Manta Ray shaped sky cruisers sounds amazing. A lot of the challenges with this project were centered around the modeling, as it was my final for Hard Surface Modeling 2. I had to learn a lot more about creating clean, smooth, shapes.
