3D Character Animation
An aspiring animator's attempt to make great animation the touches the soul. My name is Chris and I am currently getting an MFA in 3D animation and visual affects. I have started this degree with no prior knowledge of 3D animation and these are my first completely works of art after learning the basics!
This short animation is a lip sync that I tried to do. The lip sync is short but I thought of the acting and I wanted to make something that would make people laugh. It was a fun project. I even got to dabble in simple rig making with the cupcake and the book props. I would say that the face was the most fun to animate. I focused more so adding details on the head and face because I noticed that in my reference my head moved more so than my body. I thought that was an interesting accent to the animation. I also took a while to do the hand for the cupcake drop- the roll out out of the thumb was especially hard. I grew a lot and learned more about constraining as for one hand I used a locator for the movement as I couldn't figure out how to switch between the hand control and the locator. For the other, I figured it out. I wonder if you can tell the difference or even the transitions between? I tried my best to make it as seamless as possible. The hardest part of all was getting the body to move but move subtly and the hair was the hands down the most intricate of all. Trying to figure out how to have the different parts of the hair controls offset was a bit daunting. And thing figuring out the movement especially for the head turn at the end was a bit rough. I do believe I could work on the hair more. Getting it to flow and not be so bouncy and chunky was tough for me. Overall it was a fun project and I cannot wait to do more!
This short animation was an attempt to go between two emotions - serious and embarrassed. It was a great exercise as I only had 100 frames and I had to take what I wanted to do and somehow fit it into a small amount of time. It also helped to simplify the animation but still get across what I wanted to do. The hardest part of this animation was getting the different parts of the body to move while not letting complimentary parts be completely still. For example, I noticed that at some points in my reference only the upper body moves as opposed to the root/lower body. Or the body will move together and and then either the upper or lower body would continue to move as the complimentary part seemed to stay at a moving hold. I really liked these little details and wanted to convey that a bit in in my animation while making some movements seem subtle.
Here is the transformation of the morpheus character rig into my own personalized character. I ended up making my own skin texture with added purple make up. I also modified the clothing and the shoes to make shorts, booties, and a crop top. It was very fun to create this character!
