Concept Art by Farah Alshammari
Here are a few art projects I have been working on for the past few years. These art pieces depict the journey I have taken as an artist, as well as a small, peek into my original characters.
The Luck Project
This is an original art project based on my fantasy novel. I wanted to bring these characters to life and decided to use my art as the medium. The Luck Project is a story about a Leprechaun named Arthur Luck getting banished from his world Luckya to the human world. He tries to find his way back home before his godfather can harm his little brother. Along the way, he meets new people who try to help him on his journey to save his brother.
From Left to Right:
Arthur Luck, the main character of the story, a Leprechaun banished to the human world after being wrongly accused of killing guardians and theft of an ancient artifact.
Aquarius Waters, an Aquardian [merman] drawn in his original form, who meets Arthur and tries to help him save his brother.
Ellanora Rohesia Calmette, a Human Witch who stumbles upon Arthur when he least expects it and uncovers secrets that can doom all magic communities.
Above is Arthur's Familiar Caius, a hybrid between a cat and a phoenix. The practice of fusing two animal spirits such as this has long been outlawed making Caius one of the rarest and most unique. He is sneaky and will do anything to stay by Arthur's side and protect him.
Above are pages from an old bestiary created by a Luckya magic creature enthusiast long ago.
Character and Design Development
One of the challenges I faced as an artist is trying to not only find my artistic style but also to create art that could bring life and dimension to my characters. Over the years I have been striving to teach myself techniques through research, practice, and online video tutorials. Learning about dynamic poses, shading techniques, proper anatomy, and the correct use of photo-reference to better improve my art.
Below is a good example of how my art technique changed as well as the process of developing my character design. Aquarius is a merman in his more human form. When I first designed his character, he had a simple wrap-around toga, which I later changed to more form-fitting clothes that would not hinder his ability to move in the water. Another example, I changed Aquarius' gills to slits covered in a thin layer of breathable skin, which was more practical and appealing visually for my character.
Other Artwork and Projects
Below is another original novel's antagonist and protagonist characters. Each piece includes some of the processes that went into creating them. I worked to find the most suitable pose for both characters to give a small glimpse of who they are. While the antagonist is sitting basking in 'power' he believes he has, the protagonist actually demonstrates the power he wields. I wanted them to share some resemblance but also be different from one another.
Inktober 2019 Event Entries: This event happens during the month of October where you follow a 31-day prompt list. Here are some of those entries I did during the event.
