Elenia - Circus Challenge
This project is created for the Circus Challenge. I'm creating a character based on the theme: Circus.
Update - 30 Apr 2019
Here are the final renders!
Today I made a standing platform for Elenia, refined a bit more detail (wrinkles etc), adjust the sculpt as a whole a bit, so it flows a bit better.
After finishing the sculpt, I rendered her and did the final refinement in Photoshop.
Original concept, her name is Elenia, through her I want to show two sides of the Circus: the ideal, fun, exciting side on the stage, and the cruel, harsh side on the backstage. These animals that are trained to perform in the circuses are shown as if they are happy and having a good time, but the truth is that they are often tortured during training.
Most of the design inspiration of her come from elephants and clown.
I had a lot of fun working on my daughter of April:).

Update - 29 Apr 2019
Today I worked on some more details (the hands, surface detail etc., and I sculpt the wounds on her back that I have been keeping in mind for the whole time.
I also did a test render, for the final render I'm thinking to have her standing on a standing platform with a strong spotlight lighting her up from the top left.
FOR NEXT:
-modelling the small standing platform.
-rendering, background, and final refinement in Photoshop.
Update - 28 Apr 2019
I have been kinda busy with finals and stuff, but will finish her on time (I won't have time to build up a 3D environment for her tho).
Today I was adding more details on her, and I still don't think the mask before looks right, and this one in today's screenshot works the best so I think I will go for this one (for now).
I mainly create textures with substance painter, but as she is going to be a high-poly sculpt so I won't be able to texture her in substance, but I do try to use alpha to give her a bit of detail texture so it doesn't look as flat -- it is stylized and cartoonish but I think a completely smooth surface is too flat and it doesn't look as good. However, in this case, I think keeping the skin smooth is fine. I will try to give all the materials (other than the skin) a bit more surface detail.
FOR NEXT:
-more lace
-(material) surface detail
-Refine: hair color, left arm, leg band, chubbier (belly; top of legs)
Update - 26 Apr 2019
Today I worked on texturing her, the color decision was fairly straight forward -- the classic color of circus and clowns. To bring a bit more variety and contrast, I decided to also include a dark brown in the color pallet for her.
Also been trying to put more stuff on her (the armband on her right arm, and lace etc.).
I'm not really happy with the mask currently, I tried a few times with different looks and asked for feedback from my peers, and most of them prefer this one on the screenshot... I will look at it again later on and see what I can do to improve it.
FOR NEXT:
-hands, ears
-mask 4th try
-lace remake
-Refine: hair color, left arm, leg band, chubbier (belly; right calf(lower leg); top of legs)
Update - 25 Apr 2019
I have been working on the anatomy and the hair. I still think she is not as chubby as I want somehow, but I will start coloring her, and develop her along the way.
I tried to improve the design of the mask for her but it doesn't really work out. Again, I think I should start to color her and see what else I can do.
FOR NEXT:
-pearl
-color
-hands, ears
Update - 23 Apr 2019
Today I spent most of the time fixing and refine the anatomy (I knew ZBrush rig is going to break her so I didn't spend much time sculpt all the anatomy detail when she was in T-pose).
I also made the hair, and a lace brush, the lace might be a bit too small and the detail is too dense tho, so I think I will need to make a simpler one.
FOR NEXT:
-shoes
-stocking
-Finish the main body (chubbier, hands, details) and start texturing.
-Base hair detail, 2nd hair detail
-Mask remake.
Update - 22 Apr 2019
Posed her, and fixed the main stretch (ZBrush rig always 'destroy' my sculpt...).
The hat didn't work out well, as I realize if she is someone who is doing acrobat performance, it wouldn't make much of a sense to wear a giant hat like that. Therefore I will redesign it.
Will start to work on details of the costume, and the anatomy. There's still a lot to work on...
Update - 21 Apr 2019
WIP, blocked out the body and her costume. I will work on the costume a bit more and then try to pose her ASAP. Most of the fine details will be done after posing.
A screenshot of my reference & inspiration images.
Update - 21 Apr 2019
Did a quick concept sketch. I'll develop the design as I go, as I'm creating this character in 3D. The one on the far right is the pose I'm currently going for, and I kind of designed the costume based on the pose, so the costume looks the best when the character is in that pose.
Though this character, I want to show two sides of the Circus: the ideal, fun, exciting side on the stage, and the cruel, harsh side on the backstage.
