Keep On Rolling
Roll along with this ball as it struggles through the confines of isolation and confinement. This 3D animation was originally created by KandY Films: a collaboration between Peter Kwak and Wayne Yan, as a submission to the Lockdown Film Festival hosted by Escape Technology.
Concept Design
We started working on this project after quarantine orders began - and we wanted to create a story that would convey some of the frustration that comes from working in isolation.
Storyboard
Character Design
We based our initial sketches off of our favorite sci-fi robots; WALL-E's industrial treads, HAL's glowing eye, and BB-8's roly poly form factor.
Environment Design
The intentions of the design for the environment was to create two distinct sets that captured the reality and the ambitions of our main character. The contrast between the vast, natural landscape with the tight, cold cubicles served to convey the emotional struggle felt by our protagonist.
Moving In
In contrast to the wide open expanse of the first scene, the rest of the story takes place inside the 'cubicle' where the character lives. This slow zoom out, from the exterior to the interior, was key to making the transition believable.
