What is, What was & What has never been

Aina Barceló Jordana
by ainabarcelo on 27 May 2020 for Rookie Awards 2020

Images of places that curently exist, existed or have never existed. As a new member of the Architectural Visualisation world and new user of 3DSMax and Corona Renderer I produced all the imagery for these three briefs as part of the Digital Architecture Portfolio module from MA University of Kent.

"What is", "What was" &" What has never been"

All content was produced as part of the module Digital Architecture Portfolio, MA Architectural Visualisation at the University of Kent

What is

The brief of the ‘What is’ project involved the individual choosing of an existing architectural space and its CGI recreation using source reference photography and dimensioned data.

The building of my choice was Wild Lilac House designed by Walker Workshop located in San Bernardino, California.

What was

The ‘What was’ category involved the individual choosing of an architectural space that no longer exists and the production of a series of CGI that showed the space in its original condition.

The place of my choosing was Sutro Baths. Built in western San Francisco in 1896 Sutro Baths was the largest indoor swimming pool complex in the world. In 1966 the site was sold for a planned high-rise apartment complex. During the same year it was burned in a fire while in the process of being demolished.

What has never been

The brief of ‘What has never been’ consisted of developing a series of CGI of an architectural place that never existed. Suggested examples included movie sets, places described in books or videogaming sets.

I recreated some of the fictional spaces of the film The Grand Budapest Hotel directed by Wes Anderson given the rich aesthetic variety and historic periods portrayed in the film.

Thank you very much for taking the time to look at my entry. Feel free to get in touch if you liked the work I thoroughly enjoyed producing.
