OBLIQUE

The ‘Oblique’ was created as part of my Graduation project for my Bachelors degree in Design in Architecture at the University of Sydney. The studio program instructs the replacement of the old Courtroom building behind the Mint on Hospital road for a new performance venue with the capacity and accomodation for architectural exhibitions. This includes a minimum series of spaces which complement the performance spaces and surrounding context.

The project begins with the abstraction of the planetary orbitation around a solar system. This idea is superimposed with Virilio’s conception of speed, time and the function of the oblique.

The domain is a constructed public park central to events, leisure, interaction and circulation. The oblique offers as a link between the city, the park and the AGNSW.

In post-modern world of chaos, the ‘oblique’ envisions to realise a sense of liquid architecture which evokes a sense of timelessnesss. It invites the human body to become aware of their insiginifance as they engage through a spine of wholy habitable spaces.

OBLIQUE: Mass Events

This visualisation illustrates the potential of the Oblique to function as a main stage for mass gatherings and events which take place occasionally on The Domain (A Public Park located in the CBD of Sydney, Australia). It shows the multi-functionality of the Oblique; An Open stage, Vantage point, social gatherings and Public space. Here the image pictures how large crowds of people interact with each other and the Oblique during a climate rally.

OBLIQUE: Social Gatherings

The social gatherings visualisation captures the multi-functionality of the Oblique to maximise social interaction within all spaces of the building whilst maintaining the privacy of each activity through an artificial topography and the organic space devision cues throughout the building. Here, image aims to portray the transparency of the Oblique to allow both global and isolated interactions whilst being able to enjoy a dictated grand view to the natures of the outside world.

OBLIQUE: Ampi-Theatre

This final Architectural Visualisation captures the fundamental essence of the Oblique. It portrays the way the community interacts with the Oblique through-out, funnelling the an organic movement of people through a common circulation path taken by the community. Through this journey, they are invited break from the chaos and high-speed pace of the modern world and slow down as they take the time to enjoy the street performance/activities within the terraced ground plane. Naturally, the artificial topography allows an seamless access to the interior of the Oblique above.

OBLIQUE: Design Process

The initial vision and ambitions of the project were formed based on site visits and and responding to the needs of the surrounding context. The project location for Studio 3B positions itself on the edge between The Domain and Sydney CBD. The architectural brief outlines a new performance venue with the capacity and accomodation for architectural exhibitions, replacing the building behind ‘The Mint’ on Hospital road.

Thank you for taking the time to look through my submission and hope my work was in your interest.
