Ingrid Preetai - Character Design
Ingrid is a Sapyre, a fire elemental, a cross breed between flames and satyrs. Quick on her hooves and with a wit to match this devilish forge-maiden can take on anything, but will still greatly exaggerate the story she tells afterward.
Ingrid Preetai is a Sapyre, an elemental cross-breed of Satyrs and flames. Sapyre use the shape of the triangle as part of their cultural identity. The repetitive usage of triangles in her design are a symbol of fire, but also work alongside her angular features, pointed horns, and narrow ears.
I wanted Ingrid to be an approachable, yet mysterious character. Wild, in a sense towards the viewer. A constant source of uncapped and unrivaled energy, but still sly, decisive, and logical. The design of her hair semi-represents this personality dynamic. She can be free to her will, but with restrictions that she places on herself.
Final Color Palette, Design, and Turnaround.
A small animation to study the movement of her hair.
Turnaround sketches.
A small character personality study, she's the type to say something crass and then devilishly pass it off as just a joke.
Early sketches for fantasy race design, as well as clothing design and other features. Studies like these helped to understand how hair would work and various styles. Since Sapyre's have a theme of fire I also wanted to include forging, jewelry-making, and other metalwork craftsmanship into their everyday practices. So each Sapyre is typically emblazoned with various chains and pieces of jewelry, ranging from horn accessories, to ear hangings. Minimal clothing as well as different designs for chest pieces were discovered and used to reinforce idea that they reside in hot climates.
