Capricorn Queen – Concept Art & Illustration
In this personal project, I created my own interpretation of the star sign »Capricorn« – both in Concept Art and final Illustration.
Project: Star Sign Illustration
As a personal project, I wanted to create my own interpretation of the star signs resulting in final illustrations and put them into a calendar. I've started with »Capricorn« and did a lot of concept art for it (character, creature, environment, architecture).
Firstly however, I brainstormed a concept for the capricorn character and creature based on the personality traits of the star signs and my own associations. I saw perfect fit in a capricorn queen, who is a stern and proceed to action character, yet also very loving and caring deep inside (hard shell, soft core). With my final illustration I wanted to show this secret aspect of her with her fellow creature.
Character Design
I started with a costume design for the queen, studying different clothing types fitting for a queen at first and then combining my favorite aspects in a final photobashed character design.
Creature Design
Firstly, I did some studies of goats and fishes and then I created my own creature design adding the feature of wings to make it a water and air creature at the same time. With that, the queen would be able to ride it like a dragon companion.
Environment Design
As a capricorn queen, my character had to be a ruler of a snowy winter region. So I experimented with some environments and castle shapes.
Architecture Design
For my final illustration and storyworld I needed a specific area of this castle or winter region to depict. So I decided on the queen's balcony for a calm spot where she could privately show her caring side without the need to act as the stern queen she usually was. However, not all the details made it into the final illustration, since I wanted to give a better focus on the characters interaction.
Final Illustration
Here are the steps I took for my final illustration showing the queen sternly yet in a caring way interacting with her capricorn companion.
I created a basic base in Blender first (not knowing how to sculpt properly back then in 2019), did a line drawing on top and painted everything in Photoshop.
