A Sustainable Co-Working Space
Project Issue
- Global Warming (Global Warming in Malaysia is increasing in an alarming rate due to climate change causes from various pollution in Malaysia especially air pollution)
- Construction Wastage
Project Brief
Co-creative space in level 20, Menara The One Academy (6284sqft) demonstrates a sustainable co-working space and to educate Gen Y and Millennials about the culture of Malaysia where mix of diversity races live together in the same country which creates a significant history and culture since the year of independence day 1957. Moving forward for a better Malaysia, co-working space is starting to become a choice to people from all walks of life. Malaysia with a population more than 32 million is facing increasing of generation and accumulation of construction waste is getting more due to the higher demand from the market. Thus, this project aims to reduce global warming and construction waste while increase the culture knowledge into young creative industry designers and artists and at the same time boosting their roots of patriotism towards Malaysia.
The site is located in Menara The One Academy 20th floor (Block B4, Leisure Commerce Square, No.9, Jalan PJS8/9, 46150 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.)

Concept : Unified Culture Transcends Harmony
The design element and concept is inspired by Malaysia culture heritage building and tiles. By designing the whole interior with old school elements while adding pure white modern furnitures inspired by Zaha Hadid furniture design, the whole interior pops out due to the contrasity of the interior ambience and furniture. To reduced the construction waste all of the tiles used and wood are reclaimed materials from the old houses/shops.
Unified culture transcends harmony means bringing Malaysian culture into the coworking space to let the youngsters to appreciate more about the beauty of Malaysia culture while unifing the mix races for a peaceful and harmonious life.

Reception Area
Starting off from the entrance, reception counter can be seen. Reception area is design inspired by back to 1960’s Melaka street where there is posters about Malaysia and trishaw is placed into the interior for user to sit down. Information and map of the overall interior can be taken from the reception counter.
Common Area
Moving to Common Area, it is designed based on Penang/Melaka heritage shop lot facade. Users/Visitors can enjoy the ambiance by sitting in common area. Imitation of road pavement is used to guide the user which direction to go.
Phone Booth
Phone Booth is inspired back to 1890’s where British was still invading Malaya. The phone booth is designed in a british style phone booth with functional vintage phone.
Cat Pod
After passing through common area and phone booth, cat pod can be seen on the left. Mural from the Penang street can be seen with cat’s tree scratching post. This co-working space is a cat friendly space, thus users can bring along their cats to play around in this space.

Sustainability
Furnitures
All of the main furnitures are made from recycled white acrylic plastic and some furnitures has a small part of reclaimed solid oak hardwood. White acrylic furnitures relfect heat transmitted to the surface which make sure the space is not heat up. Hence, air cond can be turned off which will saved up electrical energy.
Hardwood is a versatile raw material. Wooden furnitures helps to deliver acoustic, a better ventilation and long life spent. Hardwood are usually low in embodied energy than heavyweight construction such as concrete. This leads to lowest lifecycle.
Air Purifying Plants
Each space in this coworking space has a quite a number of air purifying plants in it. This plants are able to improve better ventilation while enhancing it with hardwood furnitures to give a comfy yet cosy space making sure the space has a good amount of ventilation. By having a good ventilation, this will help to reduce the usage of air cond in the coworking space. Overall, electrical energy can be saved up about 40% and reduces heat gain which causes by heat penetration from the sun.
Recycle / Reclaimed Flooring Materials
All of the old tiles are recycle from old houses and commercial, most of the tiles are ceramic tiles. Ceramic tiles basically are a good insulating material which prevents heat transmitting into the space while reduces the chances of getting electrical shock in high voltage rooms such as the computer lab. A common characteristic of some plastics, carpet floors and some wooden finishes, ceramic tiles are very hygienic and easy to clean .
Reclaimed wood flooring are used on every wood flooring in this coworking space. This flooring is eco-friendly and more harder yet durable as compare to new lumber in the market. By using reclaim wood, it helps to preserve the world's remaining forests. The reclamation of old wood also helps divert millions of tons of wood from the world’s waste streams, landfills and burn piles.Overall, all of the flooring used in this coworking space is sustainable.
Energy Efficient Lighting
From mounted ceiling LED downlights to LED fluorescent bulbs, all of the lighting are used LED lights. LED light bulbs are extremely energy efficient and long lasting compared to normal light bulbs. An LED light bulb can cut energy consumption about 80% comapared to conventional light bulbs and can stay longer than it for more than 25%. Thus, electrical wastage can be reduced by half than the normal artificial lights.
Double Glazed Glass
All of the windows, transparent glass panels and glass doors in this co-working space is used of double glazed glass. This reduces heat transmitting into the space as this double glazing glass is made out of two layers of glass with insulating gas trapped in between. Hence, heat will be trapped in between the glass so less heat gain will be in the space.
Natural Lighting
In this space, about more than 50% of the walls and door are used double glazed glass making sure sufficient natural daylighting are able to brighten up the whole co-working space. This glass windows and doors helps to reduce artificial lighting. Hence, energy are able to save up more than 40% without opening artificial lighting during daytime.
