Once upon time, a man saw a praying mantis using a leaf to hide himself while catching insects. The man believed that the leaf was magic, and could make you invisible. So, he recovered that leaf and used it to cover one of his eyes. He then went to a store to steal. He was caught immediately.
Now we use this idiom to remind people not to focus too much on the details and neglect the bigger picture.
