Maybe One Day
A realism piece created in Maya and Substance painter of an abandoned workshop left by the deceased father of the protagonist with hopes that the protagonist can go in and use it again to carry on his fathers legacy.
Maybe One Day
My brief for this project was to create a small workbench that has been abandoned for a few years. The story is that the workbench belonged to the protagonists father who passed away. The protagonist has always been too afraid to go back into the workshop with fears that it will upset him too much of the loss of his father. Maybe one day he will go in and carry on his fathers legacy... maybe one day.
I was very passionate about this project as it allowed me to put my skills to the test and create something that I've never done before. The experience in creating this was amazing and has only fueled my passion for 3D modelling even more.
Being able to create a scene with a story and motivation behind it makes the experience of making a scene all the better.
Creating the props for this scene has been a process involving taking photo references of different objects around my garage and also combining references from the internet to create a unique piece containing a lot of depth in its modelling and texturing. It has helped me gain a better understanding of the importance of proportion and scale in my models and how it affects the realism of the scene.
I focused a lot on observation when creating this scene so I would be able to add in the details to the texture and model that give it that photo realistic look. I also looked at different variations of lighting to find out how lighting can affect colour and specularity in my renders.
I decided to choose an abandoned workshop as my piece as I felt like it gave me a great opportunity to explore many different variations of models and textures ranging from old, corroded metals from the lack of use and to the rough sand textures on the model that comes from the years of wood being cut using the tools.
For modelling, I used Maya as it is the software that I am most comfortable with and I textured the scene in Substance Painter for the same reason. This whole project has been an incredibly exciting experience for me and something I want to try again in the future is useful in bringing my skills into the industry.
