Per Aspera Ad Astra

The Voyager Golden Records are a testament to humanity's desire for expansion and exploration. Launched in 1977, the records hold sounds and images from life on earth; a time capsule for whatever intelligent lifeforms may come across it.

My original style was going to be akin to vintage astronomy prints, with thin, detailed linework and grungy textures. However, that approach made the Golden Record seem like an event in the distant past, something that doesn't connect at all to the present.

My final approach was much more modern and cinematic, and it feels more timeless compared to my old design. That timelessness is important, because the Golden Record is still out there, soaring into the night. A message in a bottle cast into the cosmic sea.

Timeless

Calypso was a sea nymph banished to the island of Ogygia, only visited briefly every thousand years. I wanted to focus on the loneliness of Calypso’s immortality, and how her perception of time would twist and warp after thousands of years of solitude. 

The plant she tends to is always growing, dying, and blooming out of order. The sun and moon are both hanging in the sky, looming over her always. These elements highlight the confusion of her experience with a blurry perception of time.

Wishful Drinking

The assignment was to choose a style to research, and have that research influence our final product. I chose to research two electronic styles: synthwave and vaporwave. I used aspects of both movements and incorporated them into the song “Wishful Drinking” by Tessa Violet.
