Tom Römer - Environment/Prop Artist
After my graduation in 2019 I started to focus more on prop design and environment art. These are four projects I'm really proud of.
Abandoned Motel
This was my first experience with modular set pieces and one of the first UE4 projects I completed.
The focus of this artwork was to get more familiar with Unreal and the Quixel Megascans workflow.
I modeled the architectural structures in Maya.
I used megascans for most materials, the ivy and some props, for the trees in the background I used NatureManufacture's "Environment Set" and some props are from Scans Factory's "Abandoned Factory Buildings".
Hunting Watch
I created this project for the "Netflix & Skill" contest held by The Rookies.
The biggest challenge I had, was figuring out what the clockwork of a pocket watch actually looks like. Unfortunately I didn't have a real life reference so I had to research a lot and spent some time on finding good reference pictures.
Getting the material just right was also quite time consuming, but I'm happy with the result.
I used Maya, Affinity Photo, Substance Painter, Arnold and Nuke.
PlayStation 2 Controller
On the search for a new possible project I took a look around my room and saw my old PS2 controller sitting on my shelf just collecting dust.
It was quite challenging to model the "handles" since they are more organic than the rest, but I'm glad that took on that challenge.
I used Maya, Affinity Photo, Substance Painter, Arnold and Nuke.
Cipher Disk
I created this project for one of the Weekly Drills. It's a recreation of the Cipher Disk from Uncharted 3.
Getting the inscriptions right was really challenging. I had to puzzle it together from images of the cipher taken from different angles.
I used Maya, Affinity Photo, Substance Painter, Arnold and Nuke.
