Two portfolio pieces from the last couple of years - A SciFi Weapon, and a Likeness Study. I am currently working on my environment creation and set dressing skills, but the project is not quite ready for presentation.

SciFi Laser Weapon - VOMLAWS-M1

Description:
A low poly scifi laser weapon with separate internal parts, which allows for showcasing them in a weapon customization scene of a video game, for example.

Information:
152 328 triangles, 3 x 4k texture sets, PBR metal-rough + Emissive & Opacity. Utilizes overlaid and mirrored UVs.

Tools Used:
ZBrush, 3ds Max, Substance Painter, Photoshop, Marvelous Designer, Marmoset Toolbag

"The VOMLAWS-M1 is a shoulder mounted weapon system suitable for single operator use, either on foot or mounted on a compatible platform. Developed by the armaments division of the NordicManufacturing Grupp AB, it is a spiritual successor to the THEL, HELLADS, and LaWS programs of the early 21st century, in portable form factor. Due to its variable output, it is effective against both armored vehicles and infantry, and because of its smart targeting and stabilization systems its effective range is theoretically limited only by atmospheric or orbital conditions. The infrared laser beam is usually invisible to the naked eye, but may become visible in different colors, depending on the particle composition of the atmosphere. When mounted on a stationary platform, it can be fed with auxiliary power and coolant gas, removing the need for replacing power cells and gas tanks."

While designing this weapon, I wanted to make it seem as if it were actually functional. Even though it was not going to be completely realistic, at least the design would be rooted in real technologies and objects. There had to be some kind of logic to how it would function and how it would be operated - Power delivery, cooling system, targeting, and field disassembly were all things I tried to take into account, as well as user ergonomics and ease of use. Sometimes this meant that the design process was like playing 3D Tetris, and not necessarily in a fun way.

The high poly was mostly created in ZBrush. ZModeler and Live Booleans were used for blocking the shapes, and Dynamesh, Polish, and Decimation to create the final high poly meshes. Marvelous Designer was used to create the shoulder pads.

The low poly was modeled and UV-mapped in 3ds Max, and textures were mostly created in Substance Painter, with some details made in Photoshop. Many of the parts use either overlaid or mirrored UVs to save texture space. Logos and texts were given more texture resolution to make them more readable, and were mapped on transparent planes on top of the model to allow for unique details on mirrored surfaces.

Likeness Study - Adam Savage

Description:
A likeness study of Adam Savage (Mythbusters), in the form of an "antique" marble bust. My birthday present to Adam.

Information:
13 802 triangles, 1 x 4k texture set, PBR metal-rough.

Tools used:
Mudbox, 3ds Max, Substance Painter, Handplane 3D baker, Photoshop

This was my first attempt at creating a likeness, as well as an exercise in retopologizing a sculpt into a low poly, animation ready mesh. However, while most of the topology is technically "animation ready", the facial expression is baked in, so the model is not actually suitable for animation as is. The model is also a single continuous surface, to mimic an actual marble sculpture, so parts like teeth, eyeballs, and the glasses would need to be separated for animation.

The likeness was sculpted in Mudbox, and the stand and glasses were Sub-D modeled in 3ds Max. The low poly was modeled and UV-mapped in 3ds Max. Normals and other maps were baked in Handplane 3D baker, and final textures were created in Substance Painter.

I also ordered a couple of 3D prints from Shapeways, which I sent to Tested.com mailbag, hoping they might find their way into Adam's hands.

Thanks for checking out my entry!
