Frankenstein's Monster
Entry for the Monster Challenge Contest, 2D concept art category
Update - 10 Mar 2020
Next, I cleaned up the overall line work and added in a base colour. I also added more detail to the face, using the provided photos of Ace Ruele as a guide for the facial features but exaggerating some facial features such as the cheekbones, chin and mouth to make the character look more monster-like (with the assumption that if an actor were to play this part, facial prosthetics may be used).
Update - 10 Mar 2020
During this stage, I developed my concept for the creature further. I decided to go with a more humanoid base form, keeping in mind that the part would need to be played by an actor, as specified in the brief. From my initial sketches, I selected two poses I liked the most (top right and bottom right sketches in my first post) and developed those, using reference photos to refine my initial concepts in more detail.
I was interested in designing a creature that could alternate between being bipedal and quadrupedal, and which had additional and/or multi-purpose limbs. My monster can either walk on four limbs (knuckle-walking like a gorilla), or walk on its two hind legs (if the front forearms are required for doing something else). The large crab-like claws function as both a weapon to defend itself, as well as serves as an extra pair of limbs which allow the monster to scuttle along on six limbs.
Update - 8 Mar 2020
My initial design sketches. At this stage I am just roughly blocking out shapes and poses that I find interesting.
