Update - 10 Mar 2020

"The aspiring Dr. Frankenstein had lost his career in the medical industry after being caught combining his patients' body parts to create new forms of life. Banished from his life's passion, the resentful ex-surgeon began work at a zoo to restore purpose to his life. However old habits are hard to break, it was not long before he began to covertly pull sick animals out of exhibits to his new ill-equipped lab. His newest abomination was something truly grotesque, collecting and modifying parts from goats, felines, bears, bats, and one very unlucky human "volunteer." To his own horror, his creation reanimated before he could complete his twisted craft. It's mission: rend it's creator to shreds for the uncomfortable and painful carcass it must live with. "

This is an infusion of animal anatomies into a twisted humanoid form. I tried to make something unique that I hadn't really seen before. I followed the director's notes of playing with proportions, making something that could move like Ace Ruele, white pearly teeth with animal anatomies. My next step was to add long black hair and texture the creature. I used the torso of a gorilla, skull/eyes of a human, the snout of a bear, a snake-like tongue, vampire bat ears, a goat leg stitched onto a backwards human leg, and a feline anthropod leg that was wrapped in preparation for a foot surgery. I hope you enjoy it, I had fun experimenting with the strange idea.

This is my final update for the Rookies Monster Challenge within the deadline. I really wish I was able to join earlier, as I have many ideas on how to push this piece further and create better lighting setups! There are many things I wished I could have added/spent more time on, such as adding fur and texturing the creature. I will continue to work on this sculpture and make a portfolio piece out of it. Will be back for next years challenge! Cheers!

New Things I tried this challenge:

Sculpting a creature, replicating anatomy, Zbrush-render pipeline, challenge participation, working against a deadline that wasn't my own, working with non-human animal references, fusing anatomies between humans and animals

Things I wish to improve:

My base, some anatomy placements, add in high resolution detail, better lighting + pose, faster sculpting workflow

I had a lot of fun during this challenge! It was super interesting to see what skill level everyone else was at too. I've got a lot to work on, I look forward to seeing how my skills have developed in the next challenges/year!

^ "Flashlight" Shot :P

^Above are my in-viewport shots that better display the form of the creature.

Update - 6 Mar 2020

Added stitches + staples to rear legs and face. Added subtle sag to the eye areas. Placed more teeth, still need to do another pass to make the gums form around the teeth. Will also be doing another pass on all stitching to reveal the pull of the stitching on the skin.

Update - 5 Mar 2020

Had a little less time than usual today, started adding teeth + tongue, tweaked head pose. Used Zmodeler for the first time ever to add a little extra detail to the bolt holding the jaw on. It's a weird but fun contextual tool :P Added eyes + new landmark for a stitch that goes between the eyes. Will be adding more facial detail and break symmetry once I finish the mouth and add more stitches.

Update - 4 Mar 2020

Today I corrected some anatomy on the non-backwards leg, still some work to be done. Adjusted arm pose + posed the head. I finally sculpted in some detail to the face + ears, added a bolt to the jaw. Will touch the bolt up with ZModeler tomorrow. Tweaked some neck anatomy, began adding landmarks for stitching and added two sets of stitches  on the hind legs. Still need to adjust how they pull on the skin, but that will be done  later as there are more major things to work on before the deadline. Planning on breaking symmetry in the face, as well as adding a bear paw as one of the hands. Will add tongue + teeth soon, now that the head is posed (I don't trust transpose master :P). Planning on how to go about sculpting the base, and thinking about where to add fur if I have the time. Happy with the progress I've made so far, it's going to be down to the wire!

Update - 3 Mar 2020

Updated, fixed, and tweaked the pre-existing anatomy. Still not perfect, but time  is short so I'm going to move on and possibly return to it later as a stretch goal if time permits. Added a backwards human leg with goat hoof-esque foot appendage. Started the rib cage and updated the neck. Still need to add the other foot, fix the hands, experiment with some final poses, and of course hone in on the face/stitching details. Learning a lot more about ZBrush throughout this project!

Update - 2 Mar 2020

Began tweaking some arm anatomies, as well as updating torso muscles/form to be in the likeness of gorilla anatomy. Sculpted a rough draft of the jaw, adjusted the hands to be more in proportion to primate feet/hands. Brainstorming the "milestones" I want to reach before breaking symmetry and adding some animalistic flair. Really trying to fix anatomy and make sure everything makes sense before subdividing any further and transitioning  to a higher detail frequency.

Update - 1 Mar 2020

Spent the evening remeshing and posing the creature using a ZSphere rig, went in and fixed some pinching and stretches. Still a lot of anatomy work to go, but I am now ready to add some muscle bulges and fix the placements of muscle; will focus on adding animal influences/parts within the next day or two after volume and form tweaks.

Update - 29 Feb 2020

After my first session of sculpting, I created a base humanoid figure to work with, added crude muscular landmarks that I will later tweak and fix their placements/scale. Playing around with arm/leg proportions and brushing up on rusty ZBrush skills. Feels interesting transitioning from a period of hard surface modeling to sculpting again! Will be squeezing in time for this between workdays.

Update - 28 Feb 2020

Hello everyone! This is my first Rookies contest, I know I am  joining a bit late but due to a coincidental surge in overtime at work I have been unavailable to participate. This is a portion of my mood board/references [rest are off screen ;) ] I will be experimenting with horror proportions and tying together anatomy from different animals.

My current goal is to integrate key features of recognizable animals into a humanoid figure. Below are some of my ideas for Zookeeper Dr. Frankenstein.

Human face, bear snout/jaw, bat ears, snake tongue, gorilla torso, mixture of hooves/paws and one leg featuring a human leg... with a twist

I am unsure of where I will be at before the deadline, texturing may be a stretch with my current sculpting experience but we'll see! Going to focus on having fun with it and experimenting with new sculpting tools.
