Working towards a movie still!

I hope to be able to make a basic composition by the deadline! Sheers! :)

Compositing away!

I rendered out in 2 layers and composited in Nuke. My previous work for school never included any compositing, so this was a first! (About time!) I learned incredibly much in this project, and there are many things that I know need tons of improvement. On the plus size it's good to work with a deadline, make a thight schedule and stick to it! I am more triggered than ever to keep on learning and wish the best of luck to my fellow participants. See you in the next contest! Sheers!

Update - 1 Jan 2020

Diving into backgrounds, lighting and rendering. Hopefully will find time to do a nice comp in post. :) This is it for now, but don't worry, it's definitely a WIP ;)

Update - 30 Dec 2019

Getting closer to what I had in mind, although there is a pile of things I am not quite happy with ofcourse. :)) This project shows me many personal points of improvement, but it's so much fun at the same time!

Update - 27 Dec 2019

I made a first version of the clothes that I will need for the still. They require some tweaking still! My exams are getting close (first one happens to be the day of the deadline), so I will definitely have to limit myself to what I need for this specific composition. I would like to try some photomapping for the background, which is again something new and exciting to explore! The rest of the time will go to lighting and rendering, and hopefully I will be able to do some final compositing in the end too!

Update - 26 Dec 2019

Thinking about composition in between modeling and texturing (and studying for my exams :) ). Will add more lighting ofcourse!

Update - 24 Dec 2019

At the start, I was uncertain about whether making a movie still would be doable, combined with my school assignments and upcoming exams. It will be hard, but I will continue working towards this untill the deadline. To push myself to my limits, I made a planning that theoretically would allow me to finish a basic still. It hurts to have to work rough and suppress my tendency for perfectionism, but I guess this is how it goes when working under serious time pressure. I'll go for it!

I modeled a Tommy face in Maya. It's the first time I try a realistic face (and only the second face I model), so it was a process of trial and error. I will not need a full body, so I will be limiting myself to only the parts that I need. A good lesson in time efficiency! :)

Sheers!

The next prop: an Irish flat cap!

I modeled this flat cap in Maya, using a simple cloth simulation to make the shape a little more interesting. I tried to create a believable tweed texture in Substance Painter, which brought up quite a few new challenges and questions. I'll keep learning and exploring! Feedback is extremely welcome and appreciated!

Sheers!

Update - 11 Dec 2019

The textured revolver, done in Substance Painter! New questions and challenges arise all the time while doing this, but I keep learning cool new things too!

Here are some general and detailed renders from Iray. Sheers!

Update - 29 Nov 2019

I finished the revolver model in Maya, it's ready for Substance Painter!

It was harder than I thought it would be, I learned a lot. :)

Here are the wireframes, smoothed and unsmoothed.

Exploring the subject!

I started modeling a first prop, while still figuring out an interesting composition for my still.

A Webley & Scott revolver!
