Hunting Watch (~1910)

This is my entry to the "Netflix & Skill" contest.

Update - 1 Jan 2020

This is my final submission to this contest.

I had a great time and learned a lot creating the watch.
Browsing the other entries was really inspiring and it was exciting to see what others came up with.
I also really appreciated the interaction and feedback be it in the comments others left on my entry or the high fives.

I can't wait for the next contest and I'm excited to see which show they'll choose next.

This is the bottom of the watch with the "main" cover, the dust cover and the clockwork with the corresponding wireframe.

Here's a close up of the dial and the corresponding wireframe.

This is the breakdown consisting of the raw render, the DOF pass, the LUT, the lighting pass and the wireframe.

Update - 16 Dec 2019

Even though the video is only 4 seconds long, it took me a few days/nights to render
Each frame took up to 40 minutes (which isn't that bad, but it adds up).

Update - 10 Dec 2019

This is going to be a small update:
I rendered a little sequence where the lights rotate around the watch to see how the textures react to light changes and if/where I would need to add more roughness details.

Update - 6 Dec 2019

Two days ago I ran into some UV problems but managed to fix them and today I finished texturing the clockwork.

This is the lighting that I think I'm going to go with.
On the right side I placed 3 area lights that all have different rotation and color temperature values to mimic candle light.
On the left side I placed a light that contrasts the one on the right with a high color temperatur (more blue-ish).
The last two area lights act as fill lights.

I also reworked the dial texture by adding a grunge map.

Update - 2 Dec 2019

I refined most of the textures and changed the table texture.
Next I'll work on the textures for the clockwork.

The process views below show how the textures (watch and table) have changed.

Update - 28 Nov 2019

Yesterday I finished the UV unwrapping and today I started the texturing process.

I will keep on refining the textures and work on the presentation.

Update - 26 Nov 2019

In the past few days I worked on the finer details like the clock hands, the closing mechanism and the part were the chain connects (not sure what it's called).

This is just an idea of how I'm going to present the watch.
I assigned some Arnold shader presets to get an idea of color and lighting.

Update - 21 Nov 2019

My process began by starting to watch Peaky Blinders and making a mindmap of my impressions/themes the first episode presented (like gambling, post war, money, working conditions etc.).
I then made a list of possible props that I could model and narrowed it down to a pocket watch, specifically a hunting watch.

After that I gathered references from the internet and made a reference board using PureRef (see below).

I started by blocking out the watch mechanism, the dial and the "exterior" of the watch.
