The Hanging Garden School

by tearst11 on 31 May 2019 for Rookie Awards 2019

The Hanging Gardens School is an art school for floral artists who work with dried flowers. The "soft" boundaries created by the hanged and pulley system are able to define spaces flexibly.

The New National Museum of Finland

As an extension of the existing museum, I include the original idea of shifted courtyards into my design but I made them interior atriums. I have created a continuous sillouette that visually connects the existing tall tower and the low administrator office. The building is surrounded by solid walls with a transparent roof hanging above like a fabric. Through the interior atriums at the basement level, visitors are able to view the highest part of roof. The exhibition areas are arranged at the lower levels to avoid too much natural light. While walking up, visitors finally arrive at the top level that is a restaurant open to fantastic views to the lake.

The Hanging Gardens School

The Hanging Gardens School is an art school for floral artists who work with dried flowers. Located close to a freeway that separates two residential areas, this school also functions as a bridge to connect two separated urban areas. Within the school, studios are designed with “soft“ boundaries that allow the varied use of work studios. Each student has a garden above and is able to hang gathered flowers from the garden for use. Underneath, students use a pulley & hanging system to access the flowers. This hanging system also serves to define the working spaces into different zones and arrangements.
