The climb

by vistavanta on 30 May 2019 for Rookie Awards 2019

A journey begins with a small step; but most of the time it starts with a climb. This is my journey and how I scale that wall called art.

Hello everyone, Vincent here! This is my first entry to this contest as a student and saying that I am nervous is an understatement. However, this is all I have and I hope this can be a good reflection on myself as an artist and hopefully all of you enjoy my works!

The first set of works I am showing here is a personal one, and it is about a Witch, and the magical world that she resides in. As my first concept design, I went and researched a lot in this project and explored a lot of interesting designs. I had fun with all the designs, also because at this time I was madly obsessed with fantasy RPG games.

The next set of works is titled Meltdown, and the whole concept revolves around three main characters who are in this journey to shut down a terraformer that has turned the whole continent into a winter wasteland.  I had fun designing this set although sadly I did not get to design overly complicated characters, but it was a refreshing experience.

As part of the syllabus, we also ought to create some key illustrations for the group project. Here are some of the key art for the Meltdown project. These series of art also opened up my eyes on how to better paint and refined my painting methods.

Finally, my last set of works I am showing now is my environment concepts. This set started out to be the most grueling one because I was not familiar with landscape compositions and depth. However as I studied and learned about this subject, I enjoyed it more and more and now I feel strongly about this field of work.

And finally I want to sneak in some of my master studies from senior artists in the industry. The ones I am showcasing today are from Brennan Massicotte and Simon StÃ¥lenhag. I really admired both of their works and take no credits for these studies. If you enjoyed these studies do check out their art, they are amazing.

Phew that has been a long one! I hope all of you enjoy the journey so far and expect more coming in the future once I get better. Now I probably have to crawl back into my hole and finish up the graduation project and polishing up my existing portfolios.

Cheers!
