I worked on this project to create a universe, design its characters and make an illustration. I got a lot of good feedback from my classmates and supervisor and learned a lot about the process of problem solving and finding design solutions to illustrate different elements of storytelling.
The Universe
This universe is a futuristic Elven civilization, where once magic flourished to the point of excess, giving rise to darker forms of magic that ultimately led to a bloody war. Magic was thereafter declared evil by newly formed religious sects of society that quickly gained support, fueled by people’s fear, and rose to power after the war ended, promising to end the rule of magic. And so a new form of technology began to develop, using magic only as fuel(in the form of a “blue substance” explore later maybe) , as individuals were not allowed to practice magic. All ancients tomes and artifacts destroyed or locked away in government vaults, and any practice punished severly by law.
Necromancy
Necromancers utilize the Life Essence to raise and manipulate the undead, a practice that was widely and brutally used in past wars, hence its current state as a taboo and a crime.
Magic and Technology
The main challenge in designing the character and items was finding a way to combine futuristic/ technological and fantasy elements. While seemingly contradictory, they coexist in this universe since magic became a forbidden relic of the past, and all that remains of it is the Life Essence, which is harnessed and used as fuel for this new type of technology.
