The Archipelago Promise
Embark on an unplanned expedition as Ethan, a sailor on a quest to find his lost twin Thomas. Navigate the Alaskan archipelago, survive the harsh weather, and unravel the mystery of Iris d'Enfer. The Archipelago Promise is an Open World Survival Game made by Students from Breda University.
The Archipelago Promise
The Archipelago Promise is an open-world survival game in which you play as Ethan, a Sailor who recently left his brother Thomas on a distant island in the Bering Sea close to Alaska. However, after sailing to where they were set to meet he was nowhere to be found. Follow his trail, navigate the treacherous weather, survive dangerous wildlife encounters, and sail between various islands within the archipelago to reunite with your brother.
The game can be downloaded on Steam by following this link: "The Archipelago Promise"
Open World Survival
With the Archipelago Promise we aimed to create an immersive open world survival game, in which the player plays as Ethan, a sailor who is looking for their brother Thomas. The player will have to sail across the Archipelago to find out what happened to Thomas, finding notes Thomas left behind along the way. All the while trying to stay alive by collecting items & crafting equipment. On their journey to save their brother they will encounter harsh weather, deadly wildlife, and constant roadblocks. Can you save Thomas in time?
We currently have around 30 minutes of content and we hope to double this by release, with the inclusion of the 2nd island the player can explore.
Sailing
Navigate the Bering Sea using Ethan's boat. Hoist the anchor, steer, and adjust your sail to catch the wind. Avoid obstacles and explore the archipelago.
Ethan's boat is more than a mode of transportation it is a home. Sleep in your boat to avoid cold & dark nights, cook in your boat to stay alive, and store your most valuable possessions.
Day and Night Cycle
Explore the islands on a sunny day or a cold stormy night. But beware even though you might see the beautiful northern lights, the cold nights bring low temperatures and hide the danger lurking in the shadows.
Wildlife
Along their journey the player will encounter three forms of wildlife: Rabbits, which can be hunted for meat & leather. Wolves, which are aggressive, but killable and Bears which are best distracted or avoided.
Immersive UI Elements
We chose to make most of our in-game UI diegetic, this to keep the player immersed while they are playing. The player can equip items and view their gauges through their watch, and they can use the notebook Thomas left behind to track their progress, craft new items and view notes.
Concepting
For the creation of The Archipelago Promise, we researched Alaskan Archipelago's such as the Aleutian Islands as well as the Bering Sea environment. We also drew a lot of inspiration from reference games such as The Long Dark, The Forest & Raft.
