UNIVERSITY PROJECTS 2022-2023
RDR2 Inspired - Ottoman Era
I was tasked to create a variety of designs for an imaginary game; I chose Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 as a source of inspiration. My idea was to take the basic structure of the game and the story, and create a new narrative and characters around them in an entirely different setting. Instead of the American Frontier, I decided to make the setting a late 16th/early 17th century Wallachia, during the time of the Long Turkish War. I also made the effort to replicate the style of the studio the best I could, since it was the source of my inspiration.
I found this time period very interesting, as it was a time of change, similarly to RDR2’s setting; the countries that were conquered or were vassals to the Ottoman Empire made attempts to fight for their sovereignity, while others fought to claim them. During these times the military was undergoing changes as well, with gun wielding armoured horsemen becoming commonplace instead of the heavy knights of the past. Hussars started appearing as well, being inspired by their very enemies, the Ottoman forces; of which many donned pelts and wings as part of their outfit or tack in battle. I found these changes and cultural exchanges fascinating, and since this setting does not really feature in any media often, I felt this would be a great opportunity to excercise creativity and tying it back to RDR2.
In this time period, it was common for Ottomans to take young boys from conquered regions (devshirme system), raise them as Turks, and in many cases train them to be elite warriors to be sent back to do battle. The protagonist of my project is one such character, who is forced to fight what he would eventually recognize as his own country and people, as part of a gang of vicious warriors, a group of akinjis who live off of plunder.
I decided to not only design the protagonist, but the gang of akinjis and hostile NPCs as well.
When making the iterations and final designs, I made sure to keep each group looking distinct from eachother. The hussars, who took inspiration from the Ottomans in real life, look similar to the Turks in my concepts regarding their similar use of animal pelts, if more tailored, and their clothing, In comparison to the rest, the Western forces look way more different, having had less direct encounters with the Ottomans historically.
Algidus Redesign
My project of redesigning an old concept of mine from 2017.
Tolkien Inspired - Ecthelion and Gothmog
My take on the design of Tolkien's characters, the elf lord Ecthelion and balrog Gothmog.
