Knight Scholar Scene

This project started as a simple exercise for my World Design class. Our brief tasked us with setting up a basic scene in three different lighting setups. Since this exercise only took into account our atmosphere we were allowed to make the actual scene as simple or complex as we wanted; anything from greybox to triple A quality. I decided to take this as an opportunity to really test what I've learnt these past couple years and go all out.

While high quality I intended to keep the actual scene setup relatively simple. I knew I wanted to incorperate a sword with a lot of natural light. I was heavily inspired by HBO's Game of Thrones and wanted to create a scene that could fit in Winterfell or the Citadel in Oldtown.

I began with a number of pen sketches in my notebook to try get a rough idea of the composition. I then took these further as digital black and white thumbnails.

I was drawn to the desk sketch as it gave me ample opportunity to light the scene in a number of ways. In Unreal Engine 4 I blocked out a version of this thumbnail with simple cubes to get an idea of the objects and their relation to one another in a 3D space.  After I was content with the arrangement I started modeling out the various elements in Maya, to a higher standard, adding an open book and a chair to draw the eye and anchor the composition on the table.

Next I moved on to texturing the various assets in Substance Painter.

Once all the assets had been modeled and texture I moved on to lighting. I first planned out the setup for each time of day in a rough sketch.
