Welcome to my Concept art 2023 Page :)

Here I show some of my creatures and a world building project. Enjoy!

First, My world building project about a friendly witch battling with nature.

I wanted to make some keyart first to settle myself into the world. For this I made a couple of thumbnails. Here I wanted to display the greatness of the land and the important role the cloud figure played in it. After a couple of tries I started rendering and ended up with the piece above. From here I worked further on my main character design!

Meet the witch !

This project was more aimed to be usable in animation. Therefor I wanted to make her design simple and readable. She has to come of as nice and caring. I put a pet sheep with her to show her caring side.

I also made some loose designs for the cloud character. He is supposed to be the antagonist without being really evil. Just like we can hate the weather but its just nature being nature.

It is still an unfinished project but I quite like the work I’ve put in so far!

My next work is about a underwater swamp creature I designed.

My starting point was a creature I designed in 2022. Now I wanted to make it more believable and real. Its a creature which eats insects and relies on nature to catch it. As in, it has flesh eating plants growing on its forehead!

I tried to figure out how it would move and catch creatures. For the colours I looked at salamanders and frogs mostly! Because it would sit very still most of the time I needed it to be camouflaged. And because part of the body would be sticking out I decided to cover those parts in grass and leaves. The kind you see in swamps so that it would be even more camouflaged and it pushed the whole ‘living with nature’ thing further!

After this I made a sheet to explain its skeleton! In case it would be animated, I also wanted to train myself with this :)

Next I made 2 illustrations to let it come alive and finish off my project!

I tried to make it so that it looks like you’re photographing the creature!

The next project I want to show is friendly gorilla like frog!

Continuing on the working with nature theme, they also eat insects they attract with their big flower like mantles!

When threatened they wrap the flowery bits around their head and trust their belly drawing to scare of any curious or angry attackers. They’re very social and also attract mates with their unique belly drawing and flowers.

To come to this form I made a lot of different versions:

I wanted it to be a mix of realistic and goofy. I feel like I kinda accomplished that! :) with this creature I also did a value study to show the kind of personality they have.

Thanks a lot for checking out my work! I appreciate it :)

Now on to the last and biggest project!

Concepting dinosaurs for my graduation project for a informative game. Misha van den Heuvel made the 3D models for which I designed the dinosaurs! @misha. The concept is made entirely by me!

Above is the promotional poster for the game. The game it self doesn’t really exist, it was a concept so that I could design dinosaurs for it. The purpose of the game is to guide the player through a environment where the dinosaurs are living. The dinosaurs are supposed to be scientifically correct but I still wanted them to be really creative and shed some new light on how they could have looked. I also wanted to avoid to make them look like monsters, they’re animals and I wanted to make sure that would convey through the designs.

Behind this work is a lot of research!

Thats why I started with the chicken, I had never drawn dinosaurs before and because birds are basically dinosaurs I made some gestures of chickens.

I wanted the dinosaurs to have more fat and feathers. Studying a chicken helped finding the form :)

After this I drew the skeleton of the Gorgosaurus, the first dinosaur I was about to concept for. It had to be correct as the 3D modeler worked from it, so again, a lot of research and naming bones.

After that I made some different versions of the feather distribution around its body.

Then I went on to the colours, this is where I could be the most creative. I mostly looked at real life animals and birds!

Now I could make the final page! I wanted to add bright colours as the Gorgosaurus was big enough to not worry about other predators. Next to that its speculated that its a scavenger instead of a hunter, so it wouldn’t need camouflage! That way I could design it like a paradise bird who uses its colours to attract mates. A big predators flaunting with its colourful feathers seemed perfect for me!

The Lambeosaurus

After the Gorgosaurus I designed the Lambeosaurus. This took a lot less time as I didn’t need to draw the skeleton. I wanted the Lambeosaurus to be a grass eating fattie.

Because the Lambeosaurus is a herd animal it has to worry about predators, but it has its numbers as an advantage! So I looked at mostly herd animals to make up the colours.

And this concludes my Rookie entry! Thanks for watching :)
