Project Rationale

‘3V Red Plastic Chair’

With its simplistic and lightweight design, it was in almost every household in Malaysia. It provided me so much nostalgic memories and has accompanied my growth. I feel like i am obligated to choose this product as a tribute to it and sourcing the actual product was not hard at all, as I have one just lying around the house waiting for that period of the year to shine again.

This project was hugely contributed to the fact that Chinese New Year was around the corner and everyone was in the mood for it already. Of course, I was influenced. Then, I thought to myself. What could represent Chinese New Year to me?

Then, I remembered the red chair that was always present every CNY. The satisfying click sound it makes when it is stacked with another. It felt like something creative can be executed with it. It provided additional seating space for family and friends alike. It ties all together.

The Storyboard

The storyboard was crucial in planning the 3D animation. Then, I stitched the scene together to form the animatics which helped me better visualize the sequence of shots, calculate frame requirements, and ensure smooth transitions between scenes. It provided a roadmap for the project's structure and visual style.

Tools

I used Cinema 4D for the 3D modelling and animation. The final rendered piece was brought to Adobe After Effects for some basic correction on the colors and additional effect to make the whole piece feel more complete.

Thoughts 💭

This was my first ever 3D animation!

This project was one that needed proper and meticulous planning as one frame took a large quantity of time to render. I started off very passionately for this subject as I enjoy motion moreover it is in 3D. I feel like I get to explore more and the possibility felt endless with an extra dimension added as compared to the 2D motion projects. I modeled almost all my assets with the highest possible quality as possible which means including an insane amount of subdivisions as compared to the norm. This will come and bite me later down the line and it did haha. I enjoyed troubleshooting and fixing those issues. It's all part of the process of growing and one day I will achieve the dreams and targets that I set out to do. Finally, I would like to extend my gratitude to my lecturers, family and friends who had been alongside me for the project.

To more projects! 🍻

Thank you for your time- Gavin.
