Infinite Gallery
"Infinite Gallery" is a 'Search for a Star' real-time environment art competition entry. Made entirely by Michaela Brückner in Unreal Engine 5 and Maya. Achieving the rare challenge of creating an infinite mirror in UE5.
Project Description
A 3D real-time game environment art entry' Search for a Star' Competition. This work demonstrates my skills for a tight deadline, in modelling, texturing, and lighting in Unreal 5 and Maya. What do you think when you hear the theme ‘Don’t look down’, with a size restriction of 30x30x30 cube. For me, I was urged to bend those rules by manipulating the space itself. I created a concept around an elongated spiral staircase with the use of infinity mirrors on the floor and ceiling. A modernised and refurbished but old art gallery staircase. The environment narrative has the potential purpose for being a hidden in-game environment, for a role-play scenario with the use of the broken banisters at the top.
My Experience
In many ways, I found this project challenged me, and I happily took on that challenge. I completed it in a three-week time limit, using a software which I lacked extensive knowledge on and this being my first big environment art project. In addition to this, I even tasked myself with creating an infinite mirror inside of UE5, which is not commonly achieved, and therefore, the topic lacks in depth information. Despite all of that, I had so much stressful fun, solving problems and modelling to my heart’s content.
Not only was I able to create my concepted model design, but also figure out how to pull off the technical application of the infinite mirror effect (without using the back up solutions). I would call that a win!
