Hi! I'm Elinor, and this is a personal project I've developed, exploring the future of the shipping industry and transforming modern technology to the future.

Project Horizon is a personal project with the goal to transform the industrial transportation industry of today into something of the future. Inspired by a visit to the Southampton docks, my aim was to present a design that could give a peek into the future of the cargo shipping industry.

The original concept was developed to keep in line with the current cargo ships, combining a mix of both aircraft and spacecraft features. The design evolved into a hybrid vehicle, having the capabilities to operate in the atmosphere of a planet while also reaching higher orbits.

Named for the discovery of new worlds, the ISSI-Horizon is a freightership that was the foundation for building a new era for the international space shipping industry. In flight, it reaches beyond the skyline, allowing easy access and transportation between resource rich planets.

The Process

To begin Project Horizon, I first sketched out my initial idea for the cargo ship, using reference from current cargo ships of today. When drawing, I was inspired by the sheer scale of the cargo ships and the operation of the cranes and docks at port.

When it came to painting the ship in it's environment, I wanted to focus on the four key stages of this container ships journey. Docking on planet, travelling along the planets surface, reaching higher orbits, and lastly the unloading station.

My first step here was to start where the ship would also start. The Port.

Next I began with developing two concepts that showed the ISSI-Horizon during its journey from port to station.

The Voyage and Traversing Oceans.

To end the freighters journey, I developed the concept of The Station

With architecture inspired by oil rigs of today, this station orbits close to the atmosphere of the planet. With two large, extending platforms, the station allows the ISSI-Horizon to dock and unload its cargo.

The Command Bridge

Here I have developed the concept for the interior of the bridge, focused on the hologram terminal, utilized for the ship’s maintenance, communications, and main operation of the three extendable cranes.

The command bridge is placed towards the stern of the ship, overlooking the cargo hold and crane operators. With additional telecommunications and control systems, the guidance and balance antennas placed on the rear base of the hull.

Early Stages

Below you will be able to see the early stages of this project, concepts that I cut from the project but often looked back to for a source of inspiration and reference during the creation of the final images.

Thank you for scrolling! This was a challenging experience but I’m happy with how this concept has turned out, it’s exciting to have seen how my skills have progressed over the course of this project, and I’d like to say a huge thanks to everyone who helped support me during the process!

Please feel free to share your thoughts, I’d love to hear what you think!
