~Film Synopsis~

It’s a rainy night in Paris, France and in a lone alleyway, a grumpy raccoon can’t reach any food despite his best efforts. In his frustration, he throws a can that hits a defenseless crow with a plastic ring around its neck. Realizing they each could use each other’s help, an unlikely but sweet friendship blooms.

~Trash Boat's Goal~

“We were a Sophmore student team from Digipen Institute of Technology that consisted of eight Digital art and Animation Majors and one volunteer SFX Major. The short project was made over the span of a semester and was our first pipelined film project. We were going for a wholesome 2D film that is simple but effective enough to be told in the time restraint of 30 seconds.  We took great inspiration from Disney’s 101 Dalmatians for the environment work, and as for the characters we wanted them to pop out against the backdrops so we opted for more graphic shapes.  We especially tried to up the cuteness factor of the crow. The themes themselves are lighthearted and emotionally driven which is why our wonderful VFX team worked very hard to shift the rainy night to a sunny dawn.”

~Pre-Production~

Our team did a ton of pre-production work for the film and while we would love to show all of our hard work, we know the judges have other entries to scroll through. We picked some of our favorites from the story, character, environment, and VFX departments.

~Story~

Our Story team mainly consisted of Story Director Emma Fleck, and Animation Lead, Hania Bielec. The goal was to tell a sweet but simple story about friendship forming even in unlikely situations.

~Character~

Our Character designers were Lead Character Artist Kiera Vermeal and Producer Cambria Cheney. The goal was to lean more into graphic and iconic shapes for the characters.

~Environment~

Our Environment Team was made up of Alexis Sabin our Assistant Producer, and Ellie Whelan. Layout was also joined by Varun Nair Our Art Director and Emma Fleck. The goal was for backdrops with varied line weights and splash textured patterns. As well as emulating the height of the characters.

~VFX~

Our VFX team consisted of our lead Tech Artist Michelle Wong and Ellie Whelan. The goal was to show the shift in character dynamic through a change in weather and lighting.
