Rose Knight

This is an adaptation of an original 2D concept by  Wu Shenyou.

I have been working on this project for a while, improving different elements of it as I learned new techniques. My goal was to use this project to learn about different modelling techniques such as using Mash, as well as learning how to use Substance. I also used this project in my lighting class and experimented with light linking and light blockers. I experimented with Xgen for the hair, but decided to go with a more stylized approach. I did keep Xgen for the eyebrows though.

Overall there are still lots of things I'd love to improve, and I've gained a better understanding of the right order to do things, and how to manage workflow through the 3D pipeline.

Scroll across the images below to see some close ups, and then below that I have included some of my material work in substance, as well as UVs and the progress images from Zbrush.

I would like to thank the artist for giving me permission to use their 2D Concept. You can find it here, as well as many other awesome pieces by Wu Shenyou:

Look Dev, AO and Wireframe

Scroll across the below for the different versions. The head model is retopologized and includes an inner mouth and teeth. In the future I'd love to create some blend shapes with different emotions for the character.

Substance textures

I experimented with a lot of different steel and tried to add little details like a variance in weathering as well as little bloodstains around the knuckles of the gauntlets. I went back and forth with the roughness of the face, especially around the lip area to make sure that the lips had a nice shine to them. I also painted in the textures around the eye for a mix between a painterly style and a bit of realism. I'd love to dive deeper into creating proper realistic eyes on a future project. Lastly, I went back in with the skin texture and created a decay/corruption around the eye that has been replaced by a rose.

Sculpting

Below are some of my working files, trying to match the reference as closely as possible. One challenge was the width of the hips, as with the armor I needed to imagine what the hip size actually was underneath.

He-Man

Model sculpted in Zbrush, Rendered with Arnold via Maya. 3D model of He-Man with a mini Battle Cat. This was a fun project to work on done between Maya and Zbrush as part of the Intermediate Zbrush Modelling clash taught by a really great teacher Charles Ellison.

The original 2D concept is by Serge Birault: https://www.artstation.com/papaninja

Niftiaz

This is a work in progress model of an original 2D design by my good friend Niftiaz. You can find more of his 2D work here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CHXuHSMr5UT/?hl=en

Likeness Sculpt

This was a sculpt using Zbrush only, I used Fibremesh for the hair.

Robot Chomper

This was my first big 3D Modelling project and was based on one of Jake Parker's wonderful robot sketches.

Thank you so much for checking out my work!
