HELL DYNASTY CHARACTER DESIGNS AND MORE
A plethora of character designs and concepts with main focus on a character design project centering on a fictitious historical fantasy game with addition to more character designs over the span of late 2022 and early 2023
CHARACTER DESIGN PROJECT: HELL DYNASTY
Inspired by games such as Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Nioh, Dynasty and Samurai Warriors and NARAKA: BLADEPOINT, Hell Dynasty is a fictitious historical fantasy action-adventure game featuring a band of warriors who fight against armies of monsters with the aid of spirits that boost their combat.
Over the course of a semester, I have designed three playable characters with different cultures and archetypes as well as their corresponding spirits.
"THE WARRIOR" CHARACTER CONCEPT
A warrior archetype. A hardened general with a beautiful and elegant feminine spirit, this design is inspired by ancient Chinese armour and famous military figures of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I wanted a contrast between the spirit and warrior but still compliment each other through the colour scheme and flower ornamentation. My biggest inspiration for this character was Guan Yu.
"THE BRAWLER" CHARACTER CONCEPT
A large and stocky brawler archetype based heavily on the Igorot tribes of the Philippines. For this design, I took heavy inspiration and references of the aforementioned tribes as it's also my family's heritage and culture. A lot of his design connects to his spirit: a large carabao, mainly through his ornamentation. I also chose to explore this character as a different body type to demonstrate my range.
"THE ARCHER" CHARACTER CONCEPT
An archer character that takes upon the warrior matriarch archetype. For her design I took inspiration from Mongolian armour and horseback archers to create a fierce and hardened cavalry archer. To make her stand out and add intrigue, she has two spirits at her disposal, a phoenix in which I based loosely on the Golden Eagle and a horse with snow-like properties. I also wanted to differentiate her from the other two with her outfit having more fur textures and less ornamentation than the other two.
STREET FIGHTER CHARACTER DESIGN PROJECT
One of last semester's character design projects was to design a Street Fighter character with the main stipulation being it has to have visual and narrative reference to a pre-existing character, as a nod to other characters within the franchise.
Presenting Angelo, a young Filipino man from the Ibaloi tribe, an expert in panantukan who came to be after a near-death experience fighting Juri inspired him. Much like Juri, he's cruel and expresses eccentric and sadistic mannerisms, taking joy in delivering pain and cruelty in a playful manner. As such I wanted his design to be an inverse of Juri - down to patterns, ornamentation and overall shape and colour. While Juri is bottom heavy as a nod to her expertise in Taekwondo, he is top heavy to nod to his primarily upper body combat style. The additional ornamentation and other details allow him to set himself apart from Juri as more than a carbon copy of her.
As one could tell, Angelo is one of my favourite character design projects to date.

CHARACTER DESIGN: "VISCERA"
A character design I did for fun, with the main concept being a character who embraces and revels in body horror and the grotesque like it's a fine art to be revered. Hence, "Viscera" full name "Dr. Arden Salvador-Blance", a former scientist turned artist who experiments on himself to create horrific modifications as an artistic expression. I mainly based Arden on religious imagery, toying with the idea of his reverence being a near-religious experience.
MINI CHARACTER DESIGNS:
The following are more small character design projects done around the end of last year.
"AGENT HELLBLOOM"
A new iteration of an original character I've made, this time making him an agent-like character inspired by action movies like Bullet Train, the John Wick franchise and Kingsmen. Here I toy with the concept of an assassin with poisonous blood used as a weapon and tool. The left being a recent work from early 2023 and the right being the original concept. I also did a callout exploring a signature weapon he'd have, which is an ornate cane sword.
"PRINCESS"
A remake of a character design done in my very first character design class in my first year of uni in 2020. Taking a vague demon design mainly based on a Barbie doll colour scheme, I updated it to become a high ranking demon called "Princess" with one of his hellhounds called "Shortcake". I mainly wanted to create a more cohesive outfit and still retain the Barbie pink theme and personality, but also as a progress marker of how far I've come in the course of three years.
